Personnel: Carol Sloane (vocals); Paul Bollenback (guitar); Houston Person (tenor saxophone); Norman Simmons (piano); Grady Tate (drums). Liner Note Author: James Gavin. Recording information: The Studio, New York, NY (04/28/2003/04/29/2001). Photographer: Eric Stephen Jacobs. While young female singers tend to catch the eyes and ears of the general public, seasoned jazz musicians, critics, and fans are the ones to appreciate a veteran vocalist like Carol Sloane. With over a half century of professional singing experience, Sloane's voice is still magic as she captures the essence of each of the 11 ballads on this High Note CD. Guitarist Paul Bollenback is the major soloist backing her warm interpretation of the bittersweet "Here's That Rainy Day." Paul West's dancing bass propels her through a magical but playful take of "The Lady's in Love With You." Her bluesy, drawn-out rendition of "This Time the Dream's on Me" (a song usually played at a brisk tempo) is backed by pianist Norman Simmons, one of the late Joe Williams' favorite accompanists. But she pulls out all the stops with her unaccompanied introduction to an emotional "My One and Only Love." She also explores a few older gems, including a polished take of Eubie Blake's "Memories of You" and a surprising bossa nova arrangement of stride master James P. Johnson's forgotten chestnut "Whisper Sweet." Tenor saxophonist Houston Person, who frequently played with the late Etta Jones, is added on several tracks, including a delightful "The Night We Called It a Day." Carol Sloane's magnificent performances throughout this disc will easily stand the test of time. ~ Ken Dryden
Carol Sloane Whisper Sweet Songs Whisper Sweet Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Let Sloane Whisper Sweet to you! I have been enjoying this album a lot. First off, the wonderful photos by Eric Stephen Jacobs are terrific (he also did Daryl Sherman's photos on her latest HUNDRED MILLION MIRACLES - and had even photographed Sloane before on her Sinatra CD - as well as many others). Like Patti Wicks' LOVE LOCKED OUT, Carol's latest is filled with ballads, although here the songs are more familiar, save the title tune which I did not know before.
All selections are truly choice, and as usual on a Sloane project, the musicians are top notch. I am especially swept away by Paul Bollenback's
guitar work (especially on "It's Easy to Remember." "More Than You Know"
and "The Night We Called It a Day"), Norman Simmons' fine playing
throughout (esp. "You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me" and "This Time the
Dream's on Me"), and special guest Houston Person shines on "Memories of You" and especially on "The Night We Called It a Day." Paul West is truly fine on "The Lady's in Love With You."
Ms. Sloane just gets better and better. I must admit I came late to her, but
in the past years I have been making up for lost time. Listening to her gives
me such pleasure; you can tell she's lived through it all, experienced life,
and through her music she interprets it just for you so that you can learn a
few of life's lessons. The singing seems so easy and natural. No gimmicks.
She reminds me of a very good cook with a recipe; the recipe being the song.
She uses only the finest ingredients (the best musicians and her own great
voice) and knows exactly how to stir them up to make the best possible
presentation. And it is a fabulous feast every single time. You can't help
but respect her artistry and the mutual admiration she shares with her
musicians. Not to mention her tremendous respect for the lyric (you almost feel like an eaves-dropper listening to "My One and Only Love" because it is so personal!)
