| | Sepultura Roorback CD Sepultura Discography of CDs
Losing a lead singer can be incredibly disruptive for a band. Some bands will bounce back -- AC/DC, for example, sounded better than ever when it hired Brian Johnson after Bon Scott's untimely death -- while others will suffer a creative decline. Sepultura experienced a major loss when former lead singer Max Cavalera left to form Soulfly in 1996, but thankfully, Derrick Green proved to be a highly capable replacement. If 1998's mildly uneven Against -- Sepultura's first album with Green -- found the band struggling with the transition, Green was filling Cavalera's shoes much more confidently on 2001's Nation. And if there are still any lingering doubts about the Green/Sepultura match, 2003's excellent Roorback should put them to rest for good. Green is passionate and focused throughout the album -- he has no problem going that extra mile -- and the writing is consistently strong. Unrest and political corruption are recurring themes on Roorback; American singer Green and his Brazilian colleagues spare no anger on incendiary tracks like "Mind War," "Apes of God," and the crushing opener, "Come Back Alive" (which is about surviving the horrors of wartime combat). The songs that Sepultura wrote for Roorback paint a consistently bleak and troubling picture of the world -- one that is only reinforced by an unlikely remake of U2's "Bullet the Blue Sky" appended to the album. Sepultura successfully give U2's gem a ferocious alternative metal makeover, and Bono's dark lyrics are right at home on this politically charged CD. When Roorback came out during the summer of 2003, Sepultura had been together for 19 years -- and this compelling disc finds them very much on top of their game after almost two decades in the metal field. ~ Alex Henderson

Roorback music CDs
$9.69 After nearly a decade of recording and a few lineup overhauls, each contributor to Amon Amarth's previous effort, Avenger, stuck around for The Crusher. Original members Johan Hegg (vocals) and Olavi Mikkonen (guitars) are again joined by Fredrik Andersson on drums, Johan Söderberg on guitar, and bassist Ted Lundström. There is nothing new on this outing to surprise fans of this band's familiar Scandinavian death metal. The riffing from guitar and drums is workmanlike, and Hegg's vocal rants carry all the requisite ferocity. During slower, more musically focused numbers like ...
| | Arch Enemy Wages Of Sin CDs (2001)
Roorback songs
$13.45 This an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Sounding like a particularly rotten day during the apocalypse, Arch Enemy is a ferocious gang of Swedish death metalers bent on throttling their listeners, and they succeed most magnificently on Wages of Sin. The Scandinavians in general are known most for their allegiance to black metal: atmospheric, epic-sounding, satanic-leaning stuff which they invented. But Arch Enemy, who includes members and former members of Carcass, Armageddon, and Mercyful Fate, is more death than black, but there's a little bit of everything in their mix of Sepultura-like riffage; mid-'80s classic, over-the-top metal solos; meat-cleaver-style hooks; and dirty Florida swamp-style death metal. Of course, death metal can easily become monotonous, but this is not at all the case with Arch Enemy, whose songwriting is way above par. Wages of Sin is the first album from the band featuring their new singer, Angela Gossow, a German blonde whose vocals never sound as if they could possibly be emanating from a woman. Rather, they sound ...

| | Ensiferum Dragonheads CD (2006)
Roorback music CDs
$8.15 Finland’s sword-bearing metal merchants Ensiferum present a crushing mini-CD, filled to the brim with melodies honouring the Nordic pagan heritage, delivered with the firm conviction of seasoned professionals they are. “Dragonheads” is also the first Ensiferum recording to feature Petri Lindroos from Norther as a full member of the band on guitar and vocals, filling the boots left by Jari Mäenpää (now pursuing a successful solo career with Wintersun). Another newcomer is Janne Parviainen (ex-Barathrum, ex-Waltari) on drums, who replaced Oliver Fokin. The line-up is completed with founding member Markus Toivonen (guitar), Sami Hinkka (bass) and Meiju Enho (keyboards).
Apparently, the widespread fan acclaim and glowing reviews bestowed upon their first two albums weren't enough to hold Finnish folk-metal ensemble Ensiferum together -- or maybe it was exactly what tore them apart -- because their second CD, 2004's Iron, had barely left the presses before vocalist and lead guitarist, Jari Mäenpää, abandoned ship to found his own group, Wintersun. What's worse, bassist Jukka-Pekka Miettinen and drummer Oliver Fokin soon followed suit, leaving only founding guitarist Markus Toivonen and keyboard player Meiju Enho to recruit new bandmembers Petri Lindroos (vocals/guitar), Sami Hinkka (bass), and Janne Parviainen (drums), and try to soldier on as best they could under the Ensiferum banner. This was done with understandable caution, at first, by fine-tuning the new band's chemistry on a mini-album entitled Dragonheads, that featured two new songs (the title track and an instrumental piece), a pair of re-recorded ...
