Closed Captioned; Soundtrack English; English Subtitles CROMWELL is an epic retelling of one of England's most bloody internal conflicts, a civil war that pitted the Puritan middle class against the decadent aristocracy. At the heart of this strife was the personal discord between Oliver Cromwell, a landed squire who reluctantly took up arms in the name of faith, and King Charles I -- the British monarch who was appalled by the concept of sharing power with a Parliament.
Cromwell's meteoric rise to power was due to his military genius. He took the untrained Parliamentarian rebels and turned them into an efficient fighting machine by promoting officers from within the ranks, based on earned merit. And when this "New Model Army" faced off with the Royalists -- whose officers were appointed according to social status -- the King's forces were crushed, and the monarch arrested, tried for treason, and beheaded. The heroic commoner, Oliver Cromwell (Richard Harris), wages battle single-handedly against King Charles I and gains control of the British monarchy in this historical epic set in 17th century England. Academy Award Nominations: Best Score. Academy Awards: Best Costume Design. Produced by Irving Allen Productions.
Color by Technicolor. Shot in Panavision at Shepperton Studios, England.
Battle sequences were shot on location in Spain, using the Spanish army as extras.
Writer director Ken Hughes had been trying to make a film based on the life of Oliver Cromwell for 10 years prior to the production of "Cromwell." However, no British producers were interested in this project. It took American producer Irving Allen, with the backing of Columbia Pictures, to make this film possible.
Alec Guinness's King Charles I is directly modeled on painter Van Dyke's portrait of the monarch. Cromwell Movie Review Average Rating: (4 out of 5 stars) Richard Harris did good Performance It's so good to see a movie with a good

The Enlish Civil Wars - Cromwell Most will say that the War of the Roses (Lancanster and York) was the first English Civil War. This period of England definitiy was the first English Civil War...there were three back to back. "Cromwell" covers the first two wars with two major battles; "Edge Hill" and "Nasby" These were the two of the three most import battles of the wars. This drama does not cover "Marston Moore". For good overview of the rise of Parliment and the fall of kings head, I recommed Cromwell. Richard Harris gives a die hard performance with Sir Alec Guiness. Keep an eye out for Timothy Dalton. Thumbs up! Submitted by a reviewer (Tucson, AZ, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Don't expect history Good though the performances are, it's not an historically accurate film. Cromwell didn't really turn up in the Civil War until the end of 1643. He was never in charge of an army until Worcester in 1648.
In the battle of Naseby it was Lord Fairfax in charge, Cromwell leading the right wing cavalry. The Parliament outnumbered the Royalists in this battle not, as depicted, the otherway round. All this plus loads of other stuff.
However, it does give a good account about what the times were about and a good feel for the era. Alec Guiness'performance as Charles Stuart is excellent (although the real King Charles was a younger man). Submitted by Simon (Grantham, Lincolnshire, England) Was This Review Helpful? $15.45 Based on the journals of Brother Gaspar de Carvajal, AGUIRRE, THE WRATH OF GOD is director Werner Herzog's hallucinatory tale of Spanish colonialists searching for El Dorado, the legendary city of gold, in 16th-century Peru. When the travellers reach an impasse, a scouting party is assembled to search for any traces of the mythical empire. As they attempt to forge their way through the dense jungle, more and more of the party falls ill while their ruthless leader, Don Lope de Aguirre (Klaus Kinski), grows increasingly insane.
Widely considered to be Herzog's finest film, AGUIRRE, which shares much in common with Francis Ford Coppola's APOCALYPSE NOW, highlights the director's visionary approach to filmmaking. Like Coppola's film, accounts of AGUIRRE's shooting are laced with legendary incidents, ...

$9.79 Sydney (Philip Baker Hall), a mysterious professional gambler, befriends John (John C. Reilly), a young man in trouble, and teaches him the ways of making a living in the casinos of Reno. John gets involved with Clementine (Gwyneth Paltrow), a pretty waitress who doubles as a prostitute, and Jimmy (Samuel L. Jackson), a two-faced criminal. When trouble erupts, suddenly Sydney has to rescue his young friend, but a secret from his past threatens to destroy everything he has tried to build up.
Director Paul Thomas Anderson's highly acclaimed debut feature (based on the films of Jonathan Demme and John Cassavetes) is a tight, intricate film noir character study with a more disciplined plot than his later, more expansive films. The film also features excellent work from his four actors, particularly Hall as the experienced, ...

$9.85 Blake Edwards's return to the male-in-meltdown territory he explored in 10 and THAT'S LIFE stars John Ritter as unemployed writer Zach, who is not only suffering from writer's block, but his drinking is out of control, as is his obsessive womanizing, and, not surprisingly, his wife wants to end their marriage. To add to his problems, his house has just burned down, and his agent is knocking at death's door. But since this is a Blake Edwards comedy, Zach has enough charm and relative affluence to continue his pursuits, which the director regards with a bemused deatchment. One of his girlfriends sets his piano on fire, and another gets him to wear a glow-in-the-dark condom, allowing him to engage in a condom duel with her jealous, similarly clad rock-star boyfriend. Eventually, Zach turns to fatherly bartender Barney (Vince Gardenia), who should have long ago cut off his bar tab, and psychiatrist Dr. Westford (choreographer Michael Kidd), and both tell him to stop destroying himself through drink. Ritter rings some surprisingly complex changes ...

$10.49 The boozing, smoking, cussing captain of a tramp steamer, Charlie Allnut, saves prim and proper Rose Sayer after her brother is killed by German soldiers at the beginning of World War I in Africa. Many quarrels later, the two set sail on the Ulonga-Bora in order to sabotage a German ship. Based on the 1935 novel by C.S. Forester, the wonderful combination of Hepburn and Bogie (who won an Oscar) makes this a thoroughly enjoyable blend of comedy and adventure. Later came the book (and Clint Eastwood film) White Hunter, Black Heart, which chronicled Peter Viertel's experiences observing Huston throughout the making of the picture.

$9.69 The true story of ANTWONE FISHER tracks a remarkable young man on the path to recovery from physical and sexual abuse. Antwone Fisher (Derek Luke) is a young Navy sailor who is on verge of getting booted from the military because of his volatile temper when he is ordered to mandatory sessions with psychiatrist Dr. Jerome Davenport (Denzel Washington). After a few strained sessions, Fisher navigates through difficult memories of his Cleveland childhood, mostly of life with a vicious foster mother (Novella Nelson) who beats him on a regular basis (and refers to him not by name, but by the n-word) and a foster sister who violates him sexually. Fisher and Davenport form a father-son bond (Fisher even adopts the doctor's wife [Salli Richardson] as a kind of surrogate Mom). And eventually he finds the strength to work through his anger and the courage to forge his first romantic relationship with Cheryl (Joy Bryant).
Writer Antwone Fisher, making his screenplay debut, achieves an encouraging view of human nature with this story, and first-time director Washington molds it into a film that ranks with GOOD WILL HUNTING and ORDINARY PEOPLE. Washington demonstrates his ease with actors by drumming ...
