(1 Customer Review)
Originally released in 2002 only through her website (www.misspattipage.com) and reissued to retail by DRG in 2003, Patti Page's Sweet Sounds of Christmas responds to fan requests for a new holiday album. In her seventies, Page retains her distinctive vocal style on a fool-proof selection of songs that runs heavily to holiday standards: "Jingle Bells," "White Christmas," "Silent Night," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "The Christmas Song," etc. The accompaniment is trimmed to a few performers, allowing Page to dominate the proceedings. Fans will be delighted (and others at least amused) by the inclusion of a remake of "I Wanna Go Skating With Willie," a song Page first recorded in 1954. ~ William Ruhlmann

Sweet Sounds Of Christmas
$13.49 The second installment of the Hard to Find 45's series is, like the first, a wide assortment of Top 40 hits, some of them indeed very hard to find on CD or even hear on the radio. Some of them are not really that hard to find on CD, though this disc (like every one in this series) takes pains to present original 45 RPM single versions, often in stereo. Whereas the first volume was devoted to material from 1955-1960, this goes into the next era (1961-1964), and though it's pretty pop-inclined, there's a good deal of diversity. There's doo wop verging on soul by the Stereos ("I Really Do Love You," the Flares' "Foot Stompin'," Clyde McPhatter's "Lover Please"), girl-sung teen idol pop (Little Peggy March's "I Will Follow Him," Marcie Blane's "Bobby's Girl"), the poppiest brand of girl group sounds (the Murmaids' "Popsicles and Icicles," Diane Renay's "Navy Blue," the Caravelles' "You Don't Have to Be a Baby to Cry"), the foreign novelty (Singing Nun's "Dominique"), ...

These albums zero in on easy listening versions of standards from the songbooks of Sammy Cahn, Jimmy Van Heusen, Henry Mancini, Johnny Mercer, Edward Heyman and Victor Young. Not an essential purchase for casual listeners, but fans who have been waiting for these LPs to make the switch ...

Sweet Sounds Of Christmas
$19.05 Even the title of the three-disc George Jones collection 50 YEARS OF HITS should be enough to tell you that the man being anthologized is one of the all-time giants of country music. A towering influence on all that followed him, not only in country but in rock and pop as well, Jones started out in the 1950s as a Hank Williams-influenced honky-tonk man who wasn't afraid of a little rockabilly either (the Hank influence is clearly audible on such early tracks as "Just One More"). By the '60s, he'd refined his approach, taking a bit from the jazz-inflected style of Lefty Frizzell and becoming a striking ...

Sweet Sounds Of Christmas
$13.79 When fiddle-playing Scottish and Irish immigrants brought their jigs, reels, and airs with them to the U.S., the Celtic music that they played eventually evolved into what we now know as bluegrass and country. Over the years, some artists have blurred the lines between bluegrass and country; that frequently happens on The Rough Guide to Bluegrass. This compilation isn't for bluegrass purists -- World Music Network takes an eclectic approach to the subject, and some of the tunes are closer to old-time country than bluegrass. But all of the selections have some type of Appalachian influence, which is the common denominator between the artists who provide hardcore bluegrass (Jim & Jesse and the Virginia Boys, Red Allen & the Kentuckians, Emerson ...
