Rhino Flashback comes up with a ten-cut comp from Rodney Crowell's earliest years with Warner Brothers when he was on fire as both a songwriter and as a recording artist. Crowell's songs have been cut by just about everybody, but his own versions still remain the definitive ones. The only unfortunate thing about this set is its hokey cover and the fact that it doesn't contain as many cuts as the now deleted Rodney Crowell Collection, which was as complete an early hits collection as you'd ever want. Nonetheless, for the price the music here is without fault. With classics such as "'Til I Gain Control Again," "Ashes by Now," "Stars on the Water," and "Heartbroke," there is plenty to listen to here for 45 minutes or so. Recommended. ~ Thom Jurek

Jackson Browne (Saturate Before Using) CD  (1972)

Country Classics
CD $9.05  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
The first Jackson Browne album presents a thoughtful, literate artist informed by the street-poet-with-guitar sound of Bob Dylan. Browne takes that approach and refines it with a more formal use of language and a more carefully crafted folk-rock sound characterized by spare, tasteful arrangements. The L.A. studio-rock sound that crept into much of Browne's '70s catalog is at a minimum here. Instead, the album ...

CD $6.49  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Recorded in the same year as the Brothers and Sisters album, this solo debut release is a beautiful amalgam of R&B, folk, and gospel sounds, with the best singing on any of Gregg Allman's solo releases. He covers his own "Midnight Rider" in a more mournful, dirge-like manner, and Jackson Browne's "These Days" gets its most touching and tragic-sounding rendition as well. Although Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe are here, there's very little that sounds like the Allman Brothers Band -- prominent guitars, apart from a few licks by Tommy Talton (Cowboy, ex-We the People), are overlooked ...

Rodney Crowell Ain't Living Long Like This CD  (1977)

Country Classics
CD $10.55  4.6 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Rodney Crowell's auspicious 1978 debut, Ain't Living Long Like This, not only showcases his songwriting prowess, but also his ability to deliver a song, whether it's one of his own or the work of another writer. Crowell possesses a sort of Everly Brothers, Nashville soul in his strong, emotive tenor, that's equally effective on the country-blues of Dallas Frazier's "Elvira," as it is on the rocking title cut or a country-folk ballad such as the self-penned "Song for the Life." Along with producer Brian Ahern (Emmylou Harris), Crowell employs a who's who of country and rock'n'roll session players, including James Burton and Glen D. Hardin, both of whom played with Elvis Presley and Gram Parsons, as well as enlisting the aid of artists such as Dr. John, Ry Cooder, Nicolette Larson, Emmylou Harris, Ricky Skaggs and Willie Nelson. As a writer, ...

Essential Rodney Crowell CD  (2004)

Country Classics
CD $7.59  4 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
Rodney Crowell first came to public attention in the mid-1970s as a member of Emmylou Harris's Hot Band, and as a songwriting contributor to her recordings, but eventually he became known as a performer in his own right. In the '80s, he was at the front lines of what some termed "progressive country," alongside the likes of Steve Earle and Rosanne Cash (to whom he was married for a while). Combining the influences of roadhouse rock & roll, traditional country, and poetic singer/songwriters like Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark, Crowell fashioned distinctive, contemporary country songs that were adaptable to the needs of other performers (many have recorded his material) but still sounded ...

But What Will The Neighbors Think/Rodney Crowell CD  (2005)

Country Classics
CD $10.59  5 stars Audio Samples
While his 1978 debut album, Ain't Livin' Long Like This, certainly caught the attention of folks in the music business, it was his second album, 1980's But What Will the Neighbors Think, that first alerted radio listeners and mainstream country fans to Rodney Crowell's gifts as a songwriter and performer, and while his self-titled 1981 follow-up wasn't the hit But What Will the Neighbors Think turned out to be, it confirmed the man was a major talent whose smart, edgy songs were a far cry from what was the norm in Nashville at the time. Collectables has reissued these two albums on a single CD, and decades after it first came out But What Will the Neighbors Think still sounds like the work of a talented maverick not afraid to take some chances; Crowell's grim assessment of America at the dawn of the Reagan era, "Here Come the 80's," would have been a gutsy way to open an album in any genre, especially country, and if "It's Only Rock 'n' Roll" takes on a less serious topic (the music business), it's no less venomous, or hits its target with ...

George Strait Somewhere Down In Texas CD  (2005)

Country Classics
CD $10.45  4.6 stars Audio Samples
On SOMEWHERE DOWN IN TEXAS, the ever-reliable George Strait stays the course he'd charted for years prior, which is to say that he once again manages to combine mainstream appeal with a classy, understated country style that makes no secret of his roots in George Jones, Merle Haggard, and the like. Unlike nearly every other country star of his era, Strait never comes anywhere near the rock trappings or power ballads that are de rigeur in so much contemporary country. There may be the occasional extraneous orchestration here and there, but any album that opens with "If the Whole World Was a Honky Tonk" and lives up to the title must have its heart in the right place. Along the way, there are echoes of Roger ...

Country Classics
CD $10.39  Top 500 Audio Samples
Brought Back to Life offers more psychobilly madness from Denmark's Nekromantix. The thrumming pulse of ringleader Kim Nekroman's coffin-shaped bass sits at the center of these songs, surrounded by approximations of rockabilly by guitarist Ian Dawn and drummer Grim Tim. It's approximations because Nekromantix are more interested in establishing an overall feel than nodding to traditionalism. Like the Misfits, who were more concerned with their showmanship and spooky overtones than adhering to any punk rock code, Nekromantix are happily enveloped in a world of zombies and evil things ...
