SONIC TRANCE was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album.
New Orleans trumpeter Nicholas Payton spent the 1990s getting in touch with his roots by digging deeply into the work of Louis Armstrong, as well as composing music inspired by the Satchmo sound. He was seen as the savior of trad jazz lovers, but with SONIC TRANCE, Payton leaves the past behind at last, moving both feet firmly into the future. In place of old-school ways, Payton surrounds his always-inspired trumpet playing with funk and hip-hop beats, samplers, and a variety of synthesizers and assorted electric keyboards.
Not only does Payton place himself in new sonic settings, he alters the sound of his own trumpet through a variety of effects, so that his already-impressive improvisational voice is given new avenues to explore. New arrival Kevin Hays proves to be a perfect foil for Payton, coating his emotive exhortations in attractive musical raiment, by turns dreamy and urgent. Instead of an out-and-out fusion of jazz and electronic a la Matthew Shipp's work on the Thirsty Ear label, this is essentially a contemporary jazz recording that bears echoes of Miles Davis's '70s experimentalism while still looking towards tomorrow.
Recorded at Right Track Studios, New York, New York.
Personnel: Nicholas Payton (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn, keyboards, bass, drum); Tim Warfield (soprano & tenor saxophone); Kevin Hays (vocals, recorder, keyboards, piano); Vincente Archer (bass); Adonis Rose (drums); Daniel Sadownick (percussion); Karriem Riggins (samples).

Though documentarian Ken Burns's ten-part series JAZZ moves through several decades and several styles of jazz, the one figure who dominates the sonic/cultural landscape of the entire documentary is Louis Armstrong, the trumpeter/vocalist generally credited with inventing jazz as we know it and pioneering the art of improvisation. Covering Armstrong's career on a single disc is a tough job, but in conjunction with the series, we are able to see how these selections represent Armstrong's various periods of development. We get not only his pioneering early New Orleans cuts lie "Potato Head Blues" and "Chimes Blues," but his later pop crossover hits, such as "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife." While the latter should be familiar to all, the former are probably known only to jazz fans, and will be a special treat for
This is part of the Columbia/Legacy Ken Burns JAZZ series.

$18.25 Here it is, our 17th album!!! This is a hugely ambitious release and one we are deeply proud of. The album begins with a gentle acoustic guitar piece 'From Hello to Goodbye', before launching into the up tempo 'Still Waiting, Still Wanting'. This track features a beautiful guitar melody and some great mellotron. After that, some fine percussion playing introduces us to the first real epic track on the album 'Studies In Heartbreak'. This track has the lot: outrageous time signatures, ...

| | David Shenton Sunnyside Blues CD (2007)
Sonic Trance
$16.45 Sunnyside is a small melting pot of a neighborhood in the western portion of the New York City borough of Queens, where I now live and of which I have grown increasingly fond. I moved here in February 2003 and immediately felt at home. The idea of Sunnyside Blues came to me one day as I was wandering down Skillman Avenue humming a tune that I thought went well with the surroundings. Since my principal language is music, I thought that I would try to express my feelings about the neighborhood through that language and invite you along for a stroll around Sunnyside. So, stepping out of my apartment building, I am immediately immersed in Sunnyside and hope you will come along with me on this musical journey.UK born violinist, pianist, composer and arranger DAVID ALEXANDER SHENTON is one of the most versatile and in demand musicians in the world today. He is the composer of 5 musicals (Tart, Barsong, Creole Nights, Anna the Storyteller and Avarice), all of which have premièred in New York. He is also the composer of more than 120 original works including everything from short piano pieces to full scale orchestral works. (David composed his first piece, Grande Valse for piano, at age 9 and his first symphony at age 12). Equally at home on the violin or the piano, David performed his first violin concerto (Bach E major) with orchestra at age 14 and his first piano concerto (Chopin F minor) at age 15. From 1993 to 1997 David studied at the Royal College of Music in London from where he graduated with the highest of honours.David has worked as an orchestrator/arranger for Abbey ...
