Charlie Ventura and Bill Harris made their mark among fellow jazz musicians but both died in obscurity. The reappearance of these historic live performances from 1947 are important parts of their discography, most of them transcribed by collector Jerry Newman during gigs at the Three Deuces. Unlike 78 rpm discs of the era, the musicians get a chance to stretch out at length. Ventura's boppish tenor sax shows the influence of swingers like Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster, yet he is clearly speaking a new language on the instrument. Harris is a bit more economical with his notes but no less effective an improviser. The rhythm section features pianist/arranger Ralph Burns, bassist Bob Leininger and the tragic but gifted drummer Dave Tough. While this isn't a complete compilation of their material from this period, it represents most of the highlights. Highly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Masada Quintet Stolas: Book Of Angels Volume 12 CD (2009)
Live At The Three Deuces, 1947 CD music
$12.99 STOLAS is the 12th volume in John Zorn's BOOK OF ANGELS series of compositions, and it's a welcome and compelling idea that he decided to re-form his stellar Masada quintet for the occasion. In addition to the rhythm section of Joey Baron and Greg Cohen, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Uri Caine, Zorn enlisted tenor sax giant Joe Lovano to replace him on all but one cut where he adds his alto, making the group a sextet. Here klezmer, Yiddish folk music, bossa nova, and other Latin jazz all come together in a seamless meld of tunes that accent the symmetry of ensemble play as much as they do an extremely advanced sense of ensemble ...

Live At The Three Deuces, 1947 songs
$13.15 John Sheridan & His Dream Band: Scott Robinson (bass clarinet); Dan Barrett (cornet); Phil Flanigan (bass instrument); Daniel Block, Eddie Erickson, Jake Hanna, John Sheridan, Rebecca Kilgore, Russ Phillips, Randy Reinhart, Ron Hockett.
Pianist John Sheridan has worked hard to keep the spirit of swing alive, both in other bands and as a leader. On Swing Is Still the King, he furthers his effort with the support of singer Rebecca Kilgore and an ensemble of nine other players, including guitarist Eddie Erickson, cornetist Randy Reinhart, and saxophonist Dan Block. Sheridan has named this combo His Dream Band, and the players are given a chance to strut their stuff on the first three instrumentals, including a nice take of Irving Berlin's "Always" and a six-and-half-minute version of "You Turned the Tables on Me." Although the ensemble is fairly large, the arrangements are spare and flexible. Kilgore joins the band on the ...

| | Bobby Womack Poet I & II CD (2009)
Live At The Three Deuces, 1947 CD music
$10.99 Though Bobby Womack's star rose high during the first half of the 1970s, the second half found the hits coming few and far between for him. However, THE POET, his first album of the '80s, marked a comeback for Womack. He entered the new era with his raw, soulful vocal style intact, but he began to mix it with synthesizer and other contemporary flavors, polishing up his sound just enough to have an impact on R&B radio, but not so much as to alienate his old fans. Along with songwriting cohort Jim Ford, he penned tunes that perfectly toed the line between idiosyncrasy and commercial appeal, making for one of the high points of his later work.
Like its predecessor, THE POET II combines Womack's raw soul with crisp, slick, contemporary production, but it goes a bit further towards the polished side. A couple of tracks ...
