People who put together Christmas albums need to understand one basic fact: what makes a Christmas album effective is not the lyrics, but the melodies. You can sing all you want about babies in mangers and freaked-out shepherds and peace on Earth, good will toward men, but if the tunes themselves don't bring back childhood memories, it's not going to feel like Christmas music to listeners. On the flip side, you can take those melodies and place them in funk, reggae, Klezmer, or jazz settings and they will still sound like Christmas music. The Om label has taken a middle road with this very fun album of Christmas electronica, offering a mixture of tunes new and old as interpreted by such A-list artists as Kaskade, J Boogie, and King Kooba. The prize for Best Original Song that Doesn't Necessarily Really Say "Christmas" goes to Kaskade, whose "Peace on Earth" is both beautiful and bracingly funky. On the other hand, Kaskade also gets the prize for Best Arrangement of a Christmas Hymn for a spectacular setting of "Still Still Still" that manages to layer house beats onto the original song without undermining any of its sweet, ethereal loveliness. Then there is Colossus, using musical samples from the Charlie Brown Christmas special as the basis for some impressive turntablism, and the Pleasant Grove Minstrels, who use "What Child Is This" as the basis for some impressive soul vocalizing. This is very nice. ~ Rick Anderson

Home For The Holidays
$9.09 CURTIS is the first solo album by R&B/soul legend Curtis Mayfield. After leaving the Impressions, Mayfield began to write lyrics that were more politically charged. With the 1970 release of CURTIS, he became one of the most important socially conscious artists of his generation. The album's opener, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below We're All Going to Go" uses racial epithets openly, as Mayfield asserts the shiftlessness of America. Set to a funky groove, with smart horn arrangements and wah-wah guitar, this ...

| | Dan Hicks Featuring An All Star... CD (2003) With DVD
Home For The Holidays
$18.05 Recorded live at The Warfield Theatre, San Francisco, California.
This 2003 package spotlights Dan Hicks (guitar/vocals) and his handpicked assemblage at a one-time-only gig at the Warfield Theatre in San Francisco on December 9, 2001, honoring Hicks' 60th birthday. While a slightly amended CD version -- missing "Shootin' Straight" and "Reelin' Down" -- is also available, this package sports a more complete performance as well as a 5.1 Surround Sound option that puts listeners center stage alongside the 40-plus players who have been key components in Hicks' legacy. In his trademark approach, the pacing is decidedly low-key, even as different aggregates of musicians come and go between practically every number. This gives each delivery a unique texture and allows for some inspired interaction. Early classics include the jug band-infused Charlatans side "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away?," with Mike Wilhelm (guitar/vocals), George Hunter (autoharp/tambourine), and Richard Olsen (tenor sax/clarinet/flute/vocals) from the original lineup of the legendary Bay Area combo. Participating from the seminal incarnations of the Hot Licks are "Symphony" Sid Page (violin), Naomi Eisenberg (vocals/violin), Jaime Leopold (string bass), and Maryann Price (vocal/percussion). "Reelin' Down," "The Buzzard Was Their Friend," "Canned Music," "Milk Shakin' Mama," "News from Up the Street," and the opening "You Gotta Believe" are all revived with considerable verve. This is especially notable in Hicks' limber fretwork, which vacillates from the hot-steppin' "Walkin' One and Only" to the sublime and intricate "Payday Blues," as well as "Strike It While It's Hot" from his then-concurrent release, Beatin' ...
