| | Fabulous Thunderbirds Tacos Deluxe CD Fabulous Thunderbirds Discography of CDs
Although on the short side at 13 tracks and just under 40 minutes, this remains a good collection of some of the Texas band's best work for the Chrysalis label. Most of these sides have already appeared on the well-chosen but unfortunately deleted The Essential Fabulous Thunderbirds. So if you already own that -- or most of their first four albums -- it's up to you whether to spring for this because it includes two previously unreleased live performances (in marginal fidelity) and a few alternate versions. The T-Birds' live take of Otis Rush's "I Can't Quit You Baby" absolutely smokes, with Jimmie Vaughan turning in a stunning solo, and the concert version of "Wait on Time" is also quite lively. Still, unless you're a die-hard fan, there's too much redundancy here. Plus, this really should be about twice as long. But if you are new to the Thunderbirds and just want a sampler of their early rocking blues (the collection stops at 1982 when they moved to Epic, where they enjoyed a few high-profile hits), this'll do nicely until a more substantial, hopefully multi-label recap of this great band comes along. ~ Hal Horowitz
Includes liner notes by Bill Wasserzieher and Denny Bruce.
Fabulous Thunderbirds: Kim Wilson (vocals, harmonica, drums); Jimmie Vaughan (guitar); Keith Ferguson (bass); Mike Buck, Fran Christina (drums).

Tacos Deluxe album
$13.05 Minimally produced (nary an overdub to be heard), the Fabulous Thunderbirds' first album showcases their tough, modern approach to the blues, with an energy and integrity that also appealed to fans of the nascent post punk/new wave bands of the day. Highlights include a faithfully swampy cover of Slim Harpo's "Scratch My Back."
Leader Kim Wilson's "Rocket Pocket" is a harmonica showcase a la Little Walter, while "Rich Woman" appropriates the riff from Bo Diddley's "Diddley Daddy" (the same one the Stones borrowed for "19th Nervous Breakdown"). The bonus track "Things I Forgot to Do" is a nice slow New Orleans style ballad, in which the T-Birds are joined by the horns from ...

Tacos Deluxe CD music
$18.05 Growing up among Afro-Americans in Berkeley, CA, Greek-American Johnny Otis (born John Veliotes) always identified strongly with people of color. Before he had attained the age of 20 he was gigging with black jazz bands throughout the Southwest, and eventually organized an ensemble deliberately patterned after Count Basie's orchestra. This highly charged album of historical musical artifacts documents the very beginning of Johnny Otis' ...

| | Skinny Williams St. James Infirmary CD (2003)
Tacos Deluxe album
$14.29 This duo date matches two veterans of the Chicago jazz and blues scene, pianist Erwin Helfer and tenor saxophonist Skinny Williams. The songs they cover draw from jazz, blues and R&B, yet all come together in very soulful settings. Williams' heavy vibrato adds to the mournful theme of "St. James Infirmary" along with Helfer's moving accompaniment. They turn boisterous in their jaunty take of Fats Waller's "Ain't Misbehavin'," as well as ...
