| | Steve Holy Brand New Girlfriend CD Steve Holy Discography of CDs
(6 Customer Reviews)
Nashville singer-songwriter Steve Holy's third album maintains the standards set by his first two: mainstream country-pop with a strong hint of '50s rock-&-roll influence, especially in the vocals. On ballads like "Baby Don't Go," Holy slips easily into a Roy Orbison-style falsetto, but his heart belongs to roadhouse country and rockabilly. This is best evidenced by the first single and title track, which starts with an overly dramatic, tongue-in-cheek spoken word intro that quickly devolves into a raucous country-rock stomp with a Big 'N Rich-style beat. Songs like "Men Buy the Drinks (Women Call the Shots)" and the straight-up rockabilly of "Hurry Up" continue the good-timey feel, while ballads like "Only the Lonely Talking" edge into Chris Isaak's retro territory. One of the rare contemporary Nashville country artists with a clear fondness for early rock & roll, Steve Holy smartly fuses the two styles into something refreshingly new. The catchy title song has attracted many "brand new" Holy fans to this CD, but Steve's long-awaited second album is like a treasure chest just waiting to be opened up by the lucky listener. Steve amazes again with his shining gold-star vocals but the songs in this collection are a jackpot of precious gems waiting to be discovered and enjoyed for a lifetime. A Puzzle??? This guy obviously has talent but I'm not sure if he knows where he's been or which way he wants to go? Nothing wrong with being eclectic, Neil Young must have made a million dollars doing that, but six years in between releases for a new artist??? Shania Twain even released a cd with a country version and pop version of the same cuts. To add embarrassment he refuses to include any of his really good single releases on cd even with this latest release. Maybe what he needs is a Greatest Hits compilation including his unreleased material to get some exposure! For sure he needs new management! At this rate his career will be over before it ever gets started! Gary Allan already has six releases, and you can bet he's not holding anything back! Brand New Girlfriend is FABULOUS Steve Holy's new CD is fantastic. This guy has got it all, the VOICE, the music, the LOOKS ... How this guy has not become a Super Star is amazing. He mixes rock and country to perfection. I have TWO of the Brand New Girlfriend CDs. One to listen to at work and one in the car ... the songs, the words ... the MAN ... Steve deserves to open for a big act.... George Strait for example to give him the exposure he deserves. What can I say ... he has made me a FAN FOR LIFE ... and you will be too after you listen to this album. You will want to get the BLUE MOON CD too. It is another treasure. Submitted by Joanne G. Brand New Girlfriend album
$7.29 R.I.D.E., the title of Trick Pony's third album, stands for "Rebellious Individuals Delivering Entertainment." Of course, in 2000's Nashville, rebelling could often mean playing straight-up old-school country while not taking oneself too seriously, two pursuits at which Trick Pony excels. A slice of good-time barroom country rock, R.I.D.E. manages to sound staunchly traditional while never sticking too close to a formula. Primary lead vocalist Heidi Newfield comes off like a bawdy mix of Tanya Tucker, Loretta Lynn, and Mae West, delivering the pure honky-tonk of "Ain't Wastin' Good Whiskey On You" and the tears-in-your-beer emotion of "When I Fall" with equal panache. It's guitarist Keith Burns, however, who delivers the record's most accessible song with "Sad City," which features a guest vocal from Hootie & The Blowfish's Darius Rucker. A mix of sawdust, sweat, and jumbotron-ready party spirit, this R.I.D.E. is guaranteed to be a wild one.

| | Brad Paisley Time Well Wasted CD (2005)
Brand New Girlfriend CD music
$9.59 Brad Paisley's music is an interesting amalgam of country sub-genres, a paradigm all its own. He melds straightforward, pop-friendly New Country with clever, somewhat Lyle Lovett-like songwriting and the occasional flutter of Joe Maphis/Jimmy Bryant-style guitar virtuosity. Surprisingly or not, this country combo platter made Paisley a star, and TIME WELL WASTED continues in the aforementioned vein. While there are some fairly mainstream moments here that wouldn't ruffle the feathers of, say, the average Kenny Chesney fan, WASTED boasts plenty of smart, sassy tunes brimming with lyrical witticisms worthy of Tom T. Hall or Shel Silverstein. "Alcohol," for example, is a first-person narrative from the beverage's point of view, and in retrospect it's shocking that it took this long to get written. Guest shots from both Dolly Parton ...

| | Keith Sykes All I Know CD (2004)
Brand New Girlfriend CD music
$13.85 Keith Sykes never got as famous as the likes of Willie Nelson, or even Jerry Jeff Walker, although he traveled in the same outlaw country circles as them ol' boys. His 2004 album, All I Know, makes plain the connections between that '70s-vintage commingling of country and rock & roll and the more recent crossbreeding that got dubbed alternative country: this album could have come out on some little Lubbock or Austin-based label in 1975 or on the Chicago indie Bloodshot 20 years later. The most Walker-like tune here is the hilarious "Keith Sykes Is Sorry," a hugely catchy apology preceded by the talking blues "Explanation of Keith Sykes Is Sorry," both of which take aim at the singer/songwriter's innate inability ...

| | Introducing... Judy Collins CD (2006) (Import) England; Argentina
Brand New Girlfriend CD music
$13.15 Rhino's 21-cut Judy Collins collection is truly a solid introduction to the often misunderstood singer and, to a lesser extent, songwriter from the new folk era of the early '60s, whose career has yet to come to a complete end. Her great run was from the mid-'60s through to the early '80s, and while Frank Sinatra gets many accolades (and justly for his reading of Stephen Sondheim's "Send in the Clowns"), it's Collins' version that was her last big Top Ten smash hit, and rightfully so because it captured a different nuance. Hell, even Van Morrison started covering the tune after her version. ...
