Recording information: Systems Two, Brookyln, NY (09/18/2002).
Understand one thing: Despite the retro-sounding handle, CHIPS are anything but an Eighties nostalgia act. Granted, there might be a few traces of no wave in the duo's musical DNA, as their eponymous innova debut would seem to indicate, but the same could be said of surf music, bebop, and Armenian folk melodies, to name but a few of the tactical options these young men wield so wildly and so well. If anything, drummer Sean Noonan (who also drives THE HUB) and guitarist Aram Bajakian have the lion's share of their rhizomes planted firmly in the neophilic neighborhood also occupied by John Zorn, Ruins, Fred Frith, and Cul de Sac. It's a sunny grove (except when it storms), where jazz, rock, and all kinds of experimentation converge freely and openly-without shame, fear, or the threat of a bad hangover. And, like their esteemed peers, CHIPS frolic.
Chips: Aram Bajakian (guitar); Sean Noonan (drums).

| | Rob Parton Two Different Days CD (2004)
Chips
$13.75 Since 1984, trumpeter Rob Parton has led his Jazztech Big Band in the Chicago area. A straight-ahead orchestra, this band has impressive musicianship, very professional soloists and a personality of its own within the modern mainstream of jazz. The arrangements of Don Schamber, Thomas Matta, Kirk Garrison, Chris Madsen and Tom Garling are inventive and the band's interpretations of ten jazz standards, "Blue Getz Blues" and Garling's "Two Different Days" are lively and full of spirit. Among the many highlights are features for Parton's flugelhorn on "Speak Low" and "My One And Only Love," tenor-saxophonist Mark Colby's playing throughout and trombonist Tom Garling's showcase on a medium-tempo version of "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You." The closing number, Chuck Mangione's "She's Gone," features Parton's flugelhorn with a string section. Big band collectors will certainly enjoy this excellent program. ~ Scott Yanow
"Two Different Days" is one, if not the best of six CD's the Parton band has released in fourteen years. The CD features Chicago trombonist extraordinare Tom Garling, the silky tenor sounds of Mark Colby, Rob Parton's sizzling lead and sultry flugelhorn sound throughout. The music features new arrangements from the pen of Thomas Matta. Most notably the swinging tune by Tadd Dameron, "On A Misty Night" and a burning version of "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You". Other tunes are the unforgettable ...

All of his songs both written and performed by him and his band are songs that get into your head and won't go away. He writes and plays with feeling, so much so that you have the tendency to get caught up in each and every one. Bryon writes songs continually; his writing sees a song in everything that happens around him. He loves music!!!! He sings and plays effortlessly. His music career started a long time ago and continues to this day. Bryon has traveled extensively and has played with numerous bands and now at the age of "over 30" he has become well established in Georgia. His fans are many and his popularity is continually growing. Bryon is a quiet man with much talent that has now began to materialize. His voice is like no other and reflects the type of person he is. Bryon lives in Carrollton, Georgia and plays many clubs in the area, he has appeared at and won several "open mic" competitions, and is extensively talked about on the radio.David Pippin - GuitarDavid has always enjoyed music, but he focused more on creative writing, pool sharking, and visual arts. That all changed, one day when a friend asked David to listen to him play guitar. From that first distorted power chord, David knew he wanted to play guitar. The friend's Lotus guitar, Big Muff distortion pedal, and Peavey amp transformed a 15 year old boy struggling with his purpose in life, into a man obsessed with the guitar. He immediately got his own guitar and blazed through instructional books, teaching himself scales, chords, and songs. Over the next several years, he continued his training under the challenging and supportive tutelage of Molly Hatchet member of Rob Scaveto. David became so consumed by his new passion that he began to ignore his other hobbies, skills, and interests even his friends! Today, David's passion for music still grows. Just as his musical tastes had expanded from rock to other styles of music, his guitar-playing style continues to draw upon many genres - blues, jazz, Latin, funk, and rock 'n' roll. David describes his unique style as a blend of "the aggressiveness of rock, the intelligence and intricacies of jazz, and the emotional passion of the blues." This explains why David is influenced by a variety of music rather than by individual artists. Simply put, if he hears something he likes, he draws ideas from it and incorporates it into his performance. What makes David unique? What separates him from the legions of other guitar players out there? "Passion for the music," he confidently replies. This passion is what makes him able to maturely play to the song; he can play with warm sensitivity or blazing aggressiveness, depending on what the song calls for. David is an accomplished musician whose education includes training at University of West Georgia's Music Department; a degree in ...
| | Frank Tuma Island Dancing CD (2006)
Chips
$11.49 Frank Tuma is proud to present "Island Dancing." This CD is a mix of music from all of the Caribbean islands, and presents songs that come from haunting, desolate, lonely locations in the Andes to underground music hot spots in Cuba, and to the ever-popular boisterous carnival parades in Trinidad, Rio and Nassau. These rhythms and counter-rhythm melodies come from the places I have traveled and sailed to under sometimes difficult conditions, but with mostly thrilling escapades and friendships. While attending college, I played at various bars and resorts to help pay for my education as a physicist. This valuable exposure to the life of working musicians convinced me to continue my education and make my way in the world of science. However, life throws interesting curves, and my goals and objectives were tinkered with and music never left the scene. Between extensive business travel and sailboat racing, I was introduced to Central and South America and most of the islands, especially in our hemisphere. Their rhythms and melodies never left me, until they exploded into a never-ending outpouring of musical compositions and a need to share them. ...
