Another in the superior series of LPs Blossom Dearie recorded for Verve in the late '50s, MY GENTLEMAN FRIEND finds the cabaret-jazz maven joined by guitarist Kenny Burrell and her husband at the time, Belgian saxophonist-flutist Bobby Jaspar, who accompanies Blossom on just a few French-language tunes--"Chez Moi," the swinging "Boum," and a lovely impressionist ballad called "L'Etang," all of which she manages with aplomb. Dearie always chose her reperoire carefully so there are almost no typical standards here. Still she excels on Cy Coleman's "You Fascinate Me So," with its deft, witty lyrics by the great Carolyn Leigh. Closing the set is her plaintive version of the Gershwin's "Someone To Watch Over Me." The singer's self-accompanying piano work is excellent throughout.
Recorded at Nola Studios, New York, New York on May 21 & 22, 1959. Originally released on Verve (2125). Includes liner notes by Lawrence D. Stewart.
Personnel: Blossom Dearie (vocals, piano); Bobby Jaspar (flute); Kenny Burrell (guitar); Ray Brown (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums).
My Gentleman Friend Music Blossom Dearie My Gentleman Friend Songs My Gentleman Friend Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Someone To Watch Over Me I don't know why this closing Gershwin track WORKS SO WELL with the rest of the jazz caberet selections included on this CD, IT JUST DOES!
Beathy intonation and perfect diction make this the best late-nite speaker-test disk for a true out-of-body experience when listening at home. A lot of musical talent gives the group some room to experiment and even find lyrical phrasing not typically tried before. More, more, more! Finally! An overlooked gem is again available... Finally, the good people at Verve have freed this fine recording from the vault. The incomperable Ms. Blossom continues her recording genius on this album. The stand out track on this recording is undoubtedly "Someone To Watch Over Me" which is recorded quietly with Blossom sitting at the piano and being accompanied by a muted combo on drums and bass. It is Blossom at her best and has been included on Verve compilations on several occasions. "My Gentleman Friend", "It's Too Good To Talk About Now", and "You Fascinate Me So" are also fabulous songs well suited to Ms. Dearie's sweet voice. "L'Etang", "chez Moi", and "Boum" could be considered an homage to her days with the french singing group 'The Blue Stars'. If you are a fan of Blossom Dearie, jazz cabaret, or just good music, you will enjoy this album. Submitted by flyingdutchman (San Antonio, TX USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Charlie Parker Timeless CD (2002)
My Gentleman Friend music CDs
$7.59 Alto saxophonist Charlie Parker was instrumental in tipping jazz over from the swing genre, which was predominantly a dance music, to bop, which aspired to art, an intellectual dance if you will, and this mid-'40s sea change began to alter the way audiences approached jazz, and pop music in general. The recordings included in this selection of Parker's classic Savoy sides were front and center in the change-over, and the first thing that hits is the frantic pace of most of these, although they are still ostensibly dance tracks, and the second thing that sticks out in tracks like "Donna Lee" is a re-establishment of the blues as a central thematic template. Bop would slow some as it evolved, and its links to dance would abate and all but vanish as things morphed into what became known as hard bop, but the blues connection would remain a ghostly constant. ...

| | David Murray Now Is Another Time CD (2003)
My Gentleman Friend album
$14.49 Saxophonist David Murray continues his cross genre initiatives on this undeniably exciting, 2003 release Now Is Another Time. With this effort, the artist enlists his longtime running mates, trumpeter Hugh Ragin and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett to complement a huge cast of Cuban musicians. This large ensemble Latin jazz extravaganza packs a mighty blow, from beginning to end. Here, the band churns out radiant, multi-layered horn arrangements atop the Cuban masters' sweltering percussion grooves and the soloists' blaring exchanges. They integrate punctual choruses into the grand mix, to coincide with the band's bold, brassy sound and thrusting impetus. Furthermore, Murray is in top form, evidenced by his climactically driven soloing endeavors -- where he peaks within the upper registers -- via an unrelenting pace. It's all about perpetual motion topped off with a festive sentiment, marked by oscillating Afro-Cuban grooves and a few poignant interludes here and there. But the musicians also utilize space to their advantage, where they often allow any given soloist, ample breathing room to reconfigure previously explored themes. Folks, this is the real deal. An awe-inspiring effort, indeed! ~ Glenn Astarita
