Concussion Symphony, the debut release from South Florida's Cyst, is something that thrash metal has needed for quite some time, a swift kick in the ass. As mainstream metal continues to take elements of thrash and death metal and make them boring, Cyst reminds us why underground metal is great. This release is a brilliant mixture of the aggression of modern metal, the brutality of death metal, and the blistering speed of thrash metal of days gone by. Dan Ortega has a vocal style that is definitely reminiscent of Slayer's Tom Araya at times, but changes style often, bringing in styles from deep death metal growls, to the blisteringly fast styles of hardcore punk. Kyle and Mike, also have an unmistakable influence by Slayer, playing crisp, fast, tight riffs, but definitely have a style that is all Cyst. Dean Piekara has quite the challenge of keeping up on bass with the blistering pace of his guitarist counterparts, but does a masterful job. The drumming on Concussion Symphony is done a drummer no longer in the band, and is nothing less than phenomenal. I've heard few drumming performances that can match this, what comes to mind is Dave Lombardo, maybe some old Dark Angel, but the style is much more modern, and also includes the best of the death metal style with machine gun blasts, and constant speed that leaves you wondering "how can this be?" The drumming has since been turned over to Alex, and has not lost a beat, judging from some recent live performances. Cyst's debut release, Concussion Symphony, is strong throughout, and very impressive for a debut release. Metal fans from many genres will enjoy this release, whether you are a fan of death metal, old school thrash, modern aggressive metal, or hardcore punk, you will not be sorry when you add this to your collection.

| | Leland Martin Simply Traditional CD (2002)
Concussion Symphony CD music
$17.09 Leland Martin's release on IGO Records is an accurate reflection of the singer's roots and musical influences. Simply Traditional is everything its title professes, with enough character to please the younger generation of country fans. The cuts prove that Martin knows what it takes to write a clever song, as with "If I Had Long Legs (Like Alan Jackson)," with its impressive weaving of top-name country stars in its lyric. Martin's "More Than Friends" will choke up even the coldest of the cold. The acoustic version of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" is hauntingly spiritual and the bonus Christmas tracks are original, though a bit mismatched with the rest of the CD. From beginning to end, Martin pays tribute to traditional country with sincere vocals, the cry of the fiddle and steel, and songs about the legends, including a guest appearance by Freddie Hart. Hopefully the folks on music row and country radio will stand up and take notice of this rising star. ~ Rick Cohoon
An experienced artist, songwriter, and performer, Leland Martin has made an impact on the country music scene. The voice is uniquely Leland's, but it sounds hauntingly familiar. He writes songs that sound deceptively simple on first listen, but closer examination reveals genuine craftsmanship. The material is varied, fresh, new and alive, but his Missouri stubbornness refuses to let go of what he knows to be true country music.Leland's country roots go back to his dad, a great singer and player in his own right, as was his grandmother, Nellie. From an early age, singing in family bands, Leland learned that traditional country music stirred something inside an audience, something they could relate to. The opportunity to perform inspired his songwriting, causing him to write from his heart and soul, in hopes of touching people with his words and music the way his heroes, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Hank Williams, and George Jones did. From southern Missouri, Leland ...
| | Riot Privilege Of Power CD (1990)
Concussion Symphony music CDs
$10.39 Like Queensr˙che's 1988 prog metal masterpiece Operation: Mindcrime, Riot's Privilege of Power works off of fear, paranoia, and conspiracy, employing ten complex tracks that work as a single unit. Where Mindcrime stuck to a straight narrative, working every Pink Floyd-ism it could into its disillusioned protagonist, Power takes a broader, less specific approach to its subject. The atmospheric snippets that tuck-point each song into place help maintain a general air of unease, eventually giving way to an ambiguous but entertaining revolution that lacks Queensr˙che's ...
| | Winds Imaginary Direction Of Time CD (2004)
Concussion Symphony songs
$9.69 Winds bring an equivalent mix of classical strings and metallic brawn to this album, although they fortunately don't fall into a time-honored rut of over-the-top guitars and solo virtuosos. This is true on the melodic "What Is Beauty?," which mixes a bit of Queensr˙che, System of a Down, and Anathema throughout. A Roger Waters-circa The Wall delivery moves the song further toward a metal slant. Carl August Tidemann has a nice solo here without the classical guitar tone. "Sounds Like Desolation" opens with a disjointed piano solo before the brief instrumental morphs into the guitar-heavy "Theory of Relativity." The softer David Gilmour-like solo is another great asset before they up the sonic ante. What works for Winds is the band's ability to toe ...
