Highlighted by the perennial "Christmas in Dixie," Alabama Christmas is a collection of holiday tunes counting among one of Alabama's strongest records, seasonal or otherwise; although at times the material is overly sappy. There's no mistaking the group's affection for the project, and cuts like "Happy Holidays," "Tennessee Christmas," and "A Candle in the Window" are all fine additions to the contemporary country Yuletide canon. ~ Jason Ankeny

There's not much about Christmas, Vol. 2 for listeners that aren't already fans of the group, but for fans, it's a fine addition to their collection. ~ Thom Owens

| | Oak Ridge Boys Christmas CD (1982)
Christmas
$6.99 For some tastes, the production on Christmas with the Oak Ridge Boys may be a little too clean, but the Oak Ridge Boys are in fine form, singing a selection of familiar carols and new holiday tunes. For fans, it's a nice supplement to a collection, but anyone else will probably find the record a little average. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Country #1 Hits Vol. 5 CD (1996)
$6.95 Sony Music Special Products' No. 1 Country Stars, Vol. 5 contains a selection of ten hits culled from the Columbia and Epic vaults. The only thing tying all these songs together is the fact that they topped the country charts, but with songs as strong as Shenandoah's "Next to You, Next to Me," Rodney Crowell's "It's Such a Small World," Exile's "Give Me One More Chance," Vern Gosdin's "Set 'Em Up Joe," Willie Nelson's "Living in the Promiseland" and Merle Haggard's "A Better Love Next Time," that's enough to make for a first-rate budget-line collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Doug Alan Sun, Surf And Sand CD (2005) (Import)
$10.29 Live Recording
Personnel: Doug Alan; Garrick Alden (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, piano, keyboards, background vocals); Scott Ebert (mandolin); Jim Wildman Unger, Jim Unger (fiddle); Tony Paoletta (steel guitar); Andy Hamburger (drums). Audio Mixer: Garrick Alden. Recording information: Garrick Alden Studios. The centerpiece track to Doug Alan's debut album is "Minutemen," a rousing salute to a group that President George W. Bush dubbed "vigilantes" in 2005. Alan's favorable lyrics posit the group as a vital and integral part of America's homeland security in the fight against terrorism, though the song never really explains how tattling on illegal immigrants crossing the Arizona/Mexico border fits in with the fight against al Qaeda. Musically, the song is more than a little reminiscent of "The Ballad of the Green Berets," and it's sung in a voice that sounds at first like some kind of deadpan parody of former late-night TV commercial mainstay Slim Whitman's baritone yodel. Then, when listening to the rest of Sun, Surf and Sand, it becomes clear that this bizarre, mannered croon is simply how Alan sings. The other songs are considerably less creepy than "Minutemen," but unfortunately, they're also dead boring. Apparently, Alan never heard a country music cliché he didn't immediately incorporate into his own music, and the onslaught of tired topics, forced rhymes, and dull, twangy melodies overpowers the listener by album's end. There are literally hundreds of terrific independent country albums released every year. Sun, Surf and Sand is definitely not one of them. ~ Stewart Mason

If you’re hurricane-weary, this song is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. NAC :^)What the critics say /press clippings:“The most curious hurricane-inspired release to date . . . “Rick Mason, City Pages, February 1, 2006“David Naccari has remade a classic Louisiana anthem, Hank Williams' "Jambalaya," as an amusing ode to those displaced to East Texas. The breezy arrangement ambles along with ukulele, mandolin, harmonica, rub board and Cajun spoons, complete with an “oh” at the end of every line.”Keith Spera, Music Writer, New Orleans Times-Picayune, September 2, 2006“ . . . one of this town's great and talented characters.”Angus Lind, Times-Picayune, April 7, 2006“After the lyrics lead you through the hardships and the evacuation, they turn back around and offer you comfort in the knowledge that we will rebuild.”Polly H. Greene, Hammond Daily Star, April 23, 2006“Katrina might have devastated most of the city's industries, but it was a huge boon for novelty-song writers. Strecker was joined onstage by avuncular middle school teacher/funnyman David "The Nac" Naccari, who plucked the song "Katrinalaya" . . .on his ukulele.”Josh Levin, Slate Magazine, August 28, 2006“Citizen journalism famously came to the fore at the Times-Picayune in New Orleans during and after the Hurricane Katrina calamity, and now the paper has introduced a special section of its site bringing together much of the reader-generated commentary and photos . . . One of the first contributions was the posting of new lyrics to Hank Williams’ bayou classic “Jambalaya,” as updated by three locals (who had to relocate to Lufkin, Texas) . . . They call it “Katrinalaya.”Editor and Publisher, December 26, 2005“. . . don’t miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to see a live performance of a song that will most likely be in the history books.”Santa Maria Sun, April 13, 2006“There are times when the wellsprings of appreciation – for deeds noble and unselfish – are so deep, only a song can convey it.”Christine S. Diamond, Lufkin Daily News, September 18, 2005“Having heard David sing the song at Tout de Suite in early October, it was a treat to be able to get the song on CD.”Judy’s World, December 11, 2005“Nipomo resident Herb Kandel heard Naccari perform at a café while volunteering in Louisiana and asked him to come to California.”Larissa Van Beurden-Doust, San Luis Obispo Tribune, April 12, 2006“The song helped raise the spirits of the city’s residents and now is raising money to help the victims.”Times Press Recorder, April 14, 2006“David Naccari will play in several venues in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties, thanks to a Nipomo resident’s efforts to bring him to the coast.”Adobe Press, April 14, 2006
| | Triosphere Onwards CD (2006) (Import)
$17.15 Line-Up:Marcus Silver (All Guitars)Ida Haukland (Vocals/Bass)Orjan Jorgensen (Drums)Biography: TRIOSPHERE from Trondheim, Norway was formed in 2004 by Marcus Silver, lead guitar player of Griffin (at that time) and Ida Haukland, who had had a short stint with Griffin to fill in the absence of hospitalized Pete Beck on vocals. After searching throughout Norway to find the right drummer, Orjan Jorgensen joined and TRIOSPHERE was born. Shortly after that, they went into a studio to record a 3-track demo and started getting recognition from both in and out of Norway. Following a few festival appearances and playing supports to the bands like TNT, Paul Di’anno and Tony Martin, they recorded the second demo, which secured them record deals with SPIRITUAL BEAST. After parting ways with Griffin at the end of 2005, Silver put a lot more efforts in the band, and finally they started recording the debut album “Onwards” in the summer of 2006, with guest appearances from ex-Griffin members Tommy Sebastian and Pete Beck (both on chorus) as well as Espen Godo from Lumsk on keyboards. The album was mixed at the Studio Fredman, owned by Fredrik Nordstrom, by the hands of Patrik J. Sten (Soilwork, The Haunted etc.). Before the release of the album, they went on a Norwegian tour with W.A.S.P. and the Americans really like their music and the performances.Selling Points:* 1st album from the Norwegian Thrash/Power Metal band, led by ex-Griffin (Norway) guitarist Marcus Silver.* Mixed by Patrik J. Sten (Soilwork, The Haunted etc.) at Studio Fredman.* Featuring two exclusive bonus tracks, including a W.A.S.P. cover version.* Thrashy and dramatic power metal with top-class guitar solos and powerful yet melodic female vocals.* Had a successful career with Griffin including critically-acclaimed 3 albums and 2 European tours.* Endorsed with Amfisound Guitars and Engl Amps.* A track will be featured on a sampler of Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles magazine
