It is extremely difficult to put one specific label on the Degree Absolute material. While having firm roots in progressive metal, DA strays from the path quite frequently, exploring the worlds of jazz and ambient music, as well as doom, thrash, and technical metal. If it was possible to compare the music of DA to the music of other well-known bands, one could say that it is based somewhere between Fates Warning's semi-progressive melodies and WatchTower's technical playing skills.
The Degree Absolute project began when multi-instrumentalist Aaron Bell came to the conclusion that his song ideas and concepts could not be realized in a typical band situation. After attempting to bring his original material into different local bands with disappointing results, he decided that a new project, void of any of the compromises associated with a true band, was necessary.
To fill the bassist position, Aaron immediately contacted Dave Lindeman. They had worked togeth
Degree Absolute: Aaron Bell (guitar); Dave Lindeman (bass guitar); Doug Beary (drums).

Degree Absolute album
$13.09 The obvious label to put on this band is "supergroup," because it consists Roine Stolt of The Flower Kings, Neal Morse of Spock's Beard, Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater, and Pete Trewavas of Marillion, but that would imply that this is just another jam session. Despite the fact that these gifted musicians put this session together rather quickly, there is a natural cohesiveness and maturity that would suggest that they have been playing together for years. In fact, it could be argued that as a collective work this is as good, if not better, than any of the aforementioned bands previous output. The influence of early progressive rock bands such as Yes and Genesis are obvious, as are the references to each member's "regular" band, but it is the influence of the Beatles, which is felt both musically and lyrically, that shines through the strongest. The opener "All of the Above" is a 30-minute epic that stands as some of the best progressive rock music ever written. The only two compositions under seven minutes are the uplifting "We All Need Some Light" and the whimsical "Mystery Train," which ...

Degree Absolute CD music
$12.25 GLAM contains music composed as a score to the film of the same name. Both the music and film was ultimately rejected by the studio, however the tracks were eventually released by Mouse On Mars as a limited vinyl LP on their label Sonig.
This LP of warm, grubby electronica was originally recorded as the soundtrack to an American film staring Tony "Who's the Boss?" Danza, and finally saw general (if somewhat limited) release in 1998, after it became clear the film would never be completed. Despite the passage of time, however (most of these tracks date from 1993 and 1994), Glam contains some of Andi Toma and Jan St. Werner's most compelling material to date, and listens like a sort of combined laboratory/proving ground for the dauby, impressionistic abstraction later pursued on the 1997 Mouse on Mars LP Instrumentals and by Werner's side project Lithops. The least "genrefied" of Mouse on Mars' already exceptionally itinerant discography, Glam is also wonderfully diverse, mixing tracks containing clamorous, sometimes goofy rhythms with introspective cuts consisting of little more than patterned clicks and raspy, absorbing organ drones. ~ Sean Cooper
Originally available as limited vinyl only, 'Glam' features fifteen densely atmospheric tracks initially composed as a film ...
| | Vanilla Doo Wop CD (2004)
Degree Absolute music CDs
$10.69 Compiling a musical anthology by race doesn't seem a smart move, since it forces assumptions on listeners and challenges them to seek out the differences that separate the music of one race from that of another, whether those differences exist or not. Yes, the Collectables compilation Vanilla Doo Wop is a very unified set, thematically and musically, since it spotlights a very specific brand of white doo wop that flourished during the late '50s and early '60s. These groups were influenced by the dreamy balladry of the Penguins and Flamingos instead of the rollicking ...

| | Sinamore New Day CD (2006)
Degree Absolute album
$13.45 The debut album by Finnish hard rockers Sinamore is atypically poppy for the fairly hardcore metal label Napalm Records: A New Day sounds much more like '80s goth rockers like the Cult or Gene Loves Jezebel than the average Scandinavian black metal outfit. Singer/songwriter Mikko Heikkila has an oddly sweet and melodic tone that at times recalls Peter Murphy's baritone croon; even when he yells, as on the dramatic "Fallen," he doesn't venture into the guttural range that's the current metal standard. Similarly, the band favors relatively mellow mid-tempo arrangements and guitar tones that owe more to echoing, reverby post-punk ...
