| | Barbara Montgomery Dakini Land CD Barbara Montgomery Discography of CDs
Barbara Montgomery focuses on tunes mostly co-written by Chick Corea for this ten-song set. The vocalist has assembled more than a dozen top-rate studio musicians -- including violinist John Blake and trumpeter Terell Stafford -- to assist her as she winds through a delightfully light, swinging repertoire, which includes a few songs penned by Montgomery. At times her deep-voiced tone is reminiscent of Susannah McCorkle, particularly on the faster tracks, but Montgomery is clearly an individualist. While no boundaries are broken, and the lyrics can get syrupy, the breezy sounds combine an upbeat lilt with good intonation, a strong command of the words, and an ability to infuse them with requisite emotion. Mixing ballads with upbeat tempos, the vocalist seems to be enjoying herself. The good recording quality adds immeasurably, as the deep sound perfectly captures the vocalist's qualities. An instrumental lift comes from especially form the trumpets of Bob Meashey and Terell Stafford. ~ Steven Loewy David Byrne again..... you may ask yourself, "what is a dakini?" Wonderful things, those dakinis, gotta have 'em. They are the female sky travelers in Tibetan Buddhism. Great bliss emanates from them at all times. Needless to say, they are very cool, as well as being incredibly compassionate and wise. So here in Dakini Land I hope to give you fun stuff, compassionate stuff, stuff full of loving kindness and wisdom. That's a lot of stuff. And, please, do whatever you can to support the cause for Tibetan independence. Like not buying goods made in China--a very difficult thing to do. Read about what is happening there. Tell your friends, your acquaintances, even people you don't happen to like too much...write your senators and congressmen/women, the president and the vice-president. Please. Now--about the music.... "...a talented, adventurous performer...(Dakini Land) is a fascinating album, a collection of her silken vocal interpretations..." Philadelphia Inquirer"...a superb storyteller...splendid timing and phrasing...(Dakini Land is) a celebratory and irresistible collection..." Philadelphia Daily News"...a silky, soft focus voice ...an intimate, misty quality...able to negotiate octave leaps and quick-step sequences..." George Kanzler, Newark Star Ledger"...(her) voice is an excellent example of how control, feeling, and emotion can combine to create an aura so confident and musical....never losing her way, staying true to the song....twisting, turning, weaving, and riding along with the melody, she floats with a seductive tone..." Randy McElligott, jazzreview "...(her ballads are) subtle, sleek, smooth, spare...with a classy touch..." John Barrett, Jr. , Jazz Improv"...the ice cream blonde with the black coffee jazz voice..." Dakini Land album
$13.05 Diana Krall's first studio outing since she and husband Elvis Costello became the proud parents of twin boys, 2009's QUIET NIGHTS finds the jazz singer/pianist turning in a serene and pleasantly subdued set. Krall breezes through a few bossa nova standards, most notably "The Girl from Ipanema" (here gender-reversed to "The Boy...") ...

Dakini Land album
$14.29 Not all mellow, Houston Person's tribute to the softer side of jazz has its moments based on the laid-back timbre of his soul rather than a program consisting of only ballads. The tenor sax he wields certainly reflects the tradition established by Ben Webster in its soul-drenched tone, but is not as vocally pronounced or vibrato-driven. The quite capable pianist John Di Martino is the one whose more enunciated notions are harnessed, while tasteful guitar by the underrated James Chirillo rings out in acceptance of Person's embraceable hues. In a program of standards and two blues jams, Person rounds into shape this quintet ...

| | Whoopi Goldberg 20th Anniversary Show CDs (2005)
Dakini Land music CDs
$14.65 Critics smacked Whoopi pretty darn hard when she returned to Broadway after 20 years. One has to wonder whether Whoopi's involvement in pap and crap like Theodore Rex, Jumpin' Jack Flash, and Hollywood Squares had anything to do with a grudge they were still holding, a grudge that wiped away the memories of Whoopi's premiere on Broadway. The premiere that The 20th Anniversary Show sentimentally celebrates was a stunning debut that held thrilling promise, which in turn made the drab comedy that came after it all the harder to take (although Whoopi's rebirth in the world of drama pleasantly suited her). Opening this two-CD document of her Broadway comeback, "Fontaine" wipes away two decades of mediocrity as the philosophizing druggy waxes poetic on George W. Bush, the Iraq War, and everything else 2005 with an extra foul mouth (apparently the Broadway-oriented DRG label doesn't know who to phone for a "Parental Advisory" sticker). It's great to hear Whoopi's effortless delivery of this edgy and deep character seemingly all but forgotten by Whoopi herself, and although she has a tendency to slip into in her Whoopi voice instead of her Fontaine voice when delivering the most stinging darts, the darts do sting -- and that the dreadlocked one is challenging her audience rather than pandering to them is a delicious experience that is as thrilling in 2005 as it was in 1985. The critics' dismissal of the show becomes painfully valid during the next segment. Sagging butts and hair growing in all the wrong places fill the thin world of the new character, ...

$11.19 'Romberg resisted the urge to put the jams (MRC Trio) through the same cut and paste process as the Random Access materials, and it was a wise call, for these long evolutions are the most effective way of hearing his own highly individual work. He may owe a sentimental debt to Elvin (Jones), but in his intense musicality and prodigious output he's closer in spirit to Jack Dejohnette. Random Access Part 3 and Tribal Dance are both jawdroppingly good.' ...
