Graham Collier composed "Midnight Blue," "Adam," and "Cathedral" as meditative responses to -- and accompaniments for -- like-named paintings by American abstract expressionist Barnett Newman. Collier, who had grown used to working conceptually after his previous effort, the monumental, stunning work Darius, recorded on his immediately preceding album of the same name, was firmly in his element with these deeply focused works. There was only one major change in Collier's band on this outing, which was the replacement of pianist Geoff Castle with Roger Dean. Castle's work had grown increasingly toward pro-rock and jazz fusion, and Collier, with his stablemates Ed Speight, Derek Wadsworth, and John Webb, were moving back into a knottily structured jazz modalism. Perhaps because of their inspiration sources, these pieces on Midnight Blue all feel very ponderous, open, and yet unyielding. This is uncharacteristic of most of Collier's work, and it feels as if even he didn't know what he was going for when he wrote these works. The lilting swing that is at the heart of his best work is absent here, and this feels more like an ECM recording than anything else. ~ Thom Jurek

WHEN I LOOK IN YOUR EYES, a 1999 Verve release, heralds the return of the cool and groovy Latin-tinged jazz of the '60s. Upon hearing the opening track, a bossa-nova-fied version of Irving Berlin's "Let's Face The Music And Dance," one might think he had accidentally put on a Getz/Gilberto record. In fact, it's hard to avoid comparing Krall's breathy alto to that of Astrud Gilberto-particularly on the more samba-flavored numbers.
But Krall ultimately resists comparisons. Her simultaneously textured and smooth tone, warm timbre, and conversational phrasing mark her as unique. The set of standards here, including "Let's Fall In Love," "I've Got You Under My Skin," and "Pick ...

Midnight Blue songs
$5.99 Principally recorded at Chris and Tina's loft, Long Island City, Queens, New York.
FEAR OF MUSIC is the point of transition between the angular art-school new wave of the Heads' early work and the P-Funk-inspired modalism of their early-'80s output. While there's nothing as funky or visionary as REMAIN IN LIGHT here, the album represents a step in a new direction. At the same time, the Heads' white-knuckled neuroticism is pushed to the extreme here. Almost unrelentingly dark and paranoid-sounding, the tunes find Byrne ...

| | Keith Scott Songs For Costa Rica CD (2008)
Midnight Blue songs
$16.45 Keith has never been nominated for a grammy, but he has played with several grammy award winners who held Keith and his music in very high regard. The CD includes 8 Keith Scott originals and 1 very unique treatment of a Billy Joel song. Below is a short description of each:1. Built in 1897, The National Theater is considered San José´s most impressive public building. Mixed with the jazz is a short segment of a C.P.E. Bach piece called ¨Solfeggietto¨ to add a little classical touch. 2. The Jazz Café, San Pedro, is where Keith first performed in Costa Rica, playing piano and singing Billy Joels \"Just The Way You Are\" for a newly engaged couple. The hundred or so mostly college students were very receptive, making the evening quite memorable. This is a fresh treatment featuring the jazz piano trio with a much different rhythmic feel than the original.3. Puerto Limón, on the Caribbean side of the country, is where you can hear lots of raggae music. This instrumental ditty featuring a vibe lead was inspired by that vibrant music scene. 4. After several visits to this beautiful church to hear baroque concerts of organ, viola, and trumpets, Keith decided to write a tribute composition. Its very baroque sounding at first, but morphs into a hand clapping celebration that should get you moving. 5. Poás Volcano (cover picture) is in a national park where you can peer into the active volcano on a clear day. Its last big blow was in 1953, which formed this eerie and enormous crater, 1.3 km across and 300 m deep. At present, geyser type eruptions occur periodically with peaceful interludes lasting minutes or weeks. Some fun sound effects were used on this production to enhance the impact. 6. Week days in San José tend to be one hectic traffic jam, but Sundays are a little more relaxed, with street musicians working for tips and restaurants a little less crowded. This tune features a synth flute lead and a masterful piano improv in the middle. 7. \"At The Beach\" depicts a beach trip from sunrise till sunset and all the frolicking in between. It features Keith´s flugelhorn and piano in a back and forth frisbee type effect. 8. Consuelo means comfort or consolation in spanish. Keith wrote this tune about four months after moving to Costa Rica in ...
