Recorded in Nettlebed, Oxfordshire, England on June 2 & 3, 1976.
1976's New Condition was indeed a radical departure for composer/bandleader Graham Collier. Instead of his sextet, the cast here is a 12-piece big band. Instead of a series of works, we have one long work in eight parts, with an introduction and a finale. The front line here is huge: three trumpets -- yes, including Harry Beckett, one saxophone -- thank god it's Alan Wakeman -- and Malcolm Griffiths on trombone. The rhythm section is made up of Collier on bass, Ed Speight on guitar, John Webb on drums, and pianist Roger Dean. This is a frustrating composition in many ways because of all its gaps, and they are the most trouble of all. Collier has composed a mirror image of traditional jazz charts: this is all freely improvised, with certain scored "interruptions" for the ensemble. The effect is stultifying. The "free flow" at the heart of the conceptualization of this work feels hackneyed, as clearly not all of the musicians here are "free" improvisers. Sorry, as brilliant as Collier is, this one falls short of the mark for him. ~ Thom Jurek New Conditions Review

| | Bill Frisell History, Mystery CDs (2008)
New Conditions album
$17.85 Guitar maestro Bill Frisell outdoes himself in ambition and diversity on the two-disc HISTORY, MYSTERY. Performing with a rich string-laden octet, the artist threads together 30 tracks, some of which derive from his collaboration with cartoonist Jim Woodring entitled "Mysterio Sympatico," and others drawn from the music Frisell composed for the NPR series STORIES FROM THE HEART OF THE LAND.
As always, Frisell's eclectic style freely blends genres together, mixing chamber music with free jazz, front porch Americana with high-minded atmospherics. Three covers-Thelonious Monk's "Jackie-ing," Sam Cooke's "A Change is Gonna Come," and Boubacar Traore's "Baba Drame"-complement Frisell's originals. By turns moody and celebratory, playful and soulful, challenging and eminently listenable, HISTORY, MYSTERY is another fine entry in this singular artist's excellent discography.

| | Bobby Previte & The New Bump Set The Alarm For Monday CD (2008)
New Conditions CD music
$13.05 Bobby Previte has always been an unusual musician. While his drumming is versatile, swinging in its own way, and adaptable to a wide variety of musical settings, his writing is always inventive and somewhat quirky. On Set the Alarm for Monday, he contributed all nine selections for a sextet of adventurous improvisers. Previte conceived the nine pieces as a suite and he sought out players who would fit the sound he had in mind. His group, which he calls the New Bump, has tenor saxophonist Ellery Eskelin as the most impressive soloist, and vibraphonist Bill Ware as a very significant player in the ensembles. Much of the music sounds a bit like a soundtrack, with a simple rhythmic figure sometimes serving as the basis for the piece and the playing ending inconclusively. The music does not feel quite finished, nor as memorable as one might ...
