Symphony of Scorpions, recorded late in 1976, was loosely based around Malcolm Lowry's shambolic novel of the same name. Written more as a saxophone concerto to showcase the work of sax great Art Themen, the ensemble Graham Collier formed for the date numbered 12 pieces, as it did for the previous year's New Conditions, and included five members of his regular group, including Harry Beckett, Ed Speight, John Webb, Roger Dean, and, of course, Collier himself. In addition to Theman, Peter Duncan, Henry Lowther, Malcolm Griffiths, Tony Roberts, Mike Paige, and John Marshall filled out the band. It is through the solo statements by Theman that new themes, motions, and directions are uncovered in Collier's loosely written text. At times indulgent, and at others very sparse, the ensemble moves along with excellent focus, drama, and tension, allowing for groupings of smaller units inside the ensemble to carry the motion of this seemingly directionless ramble forward -- all the while honing in on Collier's small-figured place of balance within movement. This is an arduous listen, but is far more successful at sustenance and creative dialogue than New Conditions was, and showcases Collier as having fully embraced the vanguard, and as being very comfortable writing for such a large group. ~ Thom Jurek

$9.99 ELLA FITZGERALD WISHES YOU A SWINGING CHRISTMAS is a charming, warmly humorous--and yes, swinging--set of classic Christmas tunes. The program is familiar, from bouncy singalongs like "Jingle Bells" to slinky ballads like a downright sexy "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," but Fitzgerald treats ...
| | Nick Warren Renaissance: Revelation CDs (2001)
Symphony Of Scorpions music CDs
$17.19 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ's Nick Warren and Danny Howells.
Nick Warren and Danny Howells -- both previously featured in the Global Underground series -- each mix a disc on this entry into the similar Renaissance series. And, as you might presume, these mixes are indeed awfully similar to these DJs' previous Global Underground efforts -- nothing but the latest batch of progressive house tracks. Both sets are dark and ominous, only the occasional female vocal shedding any light on these monolithic mixes. This is the sound of progressive house circa 2001. Occasional tracks like Ashley Beedle's Mahavishnu Vocal Mix of Bent's "Always" and Deep Dish's remix of iio's "Rapture" are uplifting moments, but for the most part, they are just brief shimmers of light in otherwise dark and disorienting sets by Warren and Howells. ~ Jason Birchmeier
Formed in 2000, Sin Bandera is comprised of Leonel García and Noel Schajris; the former is from Mexico, the latter Argentina, and both are musicians, composers, and singers. Schajris had already released a solo album, in 1999, but when the two singer/songwriter/musicians befriended one another and realized how complementary they were to one another artistically, they joined together and began to work on songs for an album. García played guitar, Schajris played piano, and fellow musician Aureo Baqueiro assumed the role of producer, also contributing various instrumentation. The guys decided to bill themselves as Sin Bandera (Without a Flag) because of their mixed heritage as well as their belief in unity among diverse peoples.
They debuted with the song "Entra en Mi Vida," an expressive love song that was chosen to be the main theme of a Mexican telenovela, Cuando Seas Mía. Other singles followed, including "Kilómetros" and "Sirena." Released in early 2002, Sin Bandera steadily found international success, mainly in Mexico but also in Spain, Argentina, and the United States -- that is, all the major Latin markets -- in addition to smaller markets like Costa Rica. The album won that year's Latin Grammy for Best Pop Album by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and it also netted a standard Grammy nomination for Best Latin Pop Album. Other awards showered on the duo included an MTV Latino Award for Best Group and a Lo Nuestro Award for Best Pop Album.
Following this rash of breakout success, Sin Bandera returned to the studio quickly and recorded a follow-up album, De Viaje (2003), with Baqueiro again producing and playing a multitude of instruments. De Viaje sold even better than Sin Bandera ...
| | Definitive Joe Williams CD (2002)
Symphony Of Scorpions songs
$7.95 Recorded between 1955 & 1990. Includes liner notes by Ken Druker.
The Definitive Joe Williams takes a look back at the illustrious career of one of the greatest singers in the history of music. The 19 tracks are drawn from his two stints recording for Verve and his prolific stay with Roulette. The CD kicks off with four tracks from the great Count Basie Swings, Joe Williams Sings record from 1955 including spectacular versions of "Every Day I Have the Blues" and "All Right, Okay, You Win" that leave no doubt in the listener's mind that Joe Williams could swing until the cows, chickens, and even ducks came home. Two songs, one of which is the rockingest version of "Singin' in the Rain" you'll likely ever hear, from the follow-up record from 1956, The Greatest! Count Basie Plays, Joe Williams Sings Standards, are next, followed by a duet with Ella Fitzgerald. They both show off their prodigious scat talents, and Ella wins the duel but only just. Williams left Basie in the late '50s and signed with Roulette. His music still had tons of swing, but he also delved into pop songs and lush balladry. Tracks like 1958's "If I Could Be With You One Hour Tonight" demonstrate the ...

Symphony Of Scorpions songs
$15.19 The heart of Dave Daniels Band beats with Dave himself, a gifted musician who embraced all genres of music at an early age. His parents raised him with vinyl records constantly turning, inspiring him to sing and play to folk and rock artists such as The Beatles, Joni Mitchell and Crosby, Stills & Nash. His aunt often babysat him to the music of Soul Train, allowing him to commune with the fantastic soul and R&B music of legends like Stevie Wonder, The Jackson 5 and Prince. As a bored teenager in the small desert town of Borrego Springs, California, he turned to playing music in front of the radio for entertainment, picking out tunes by Tears For Fears and the Stray Cats. Gaining self-taught musical momentum, he decided to hone his craft by pursuing an academic background in music, and would later graduate from college with a degree in music composition and a dream. The pursuit of his dream of playing music for people while still earning enough to eat landed him in several bands. This gave him onstage experience and camaraderie but left a burning desire ...
