Given the date of this release and the band lineup, one might assume that this is a straight-up hard-bop album. However, this 1966 Joe Henderson record--featuring trumpeter Lee Morgan, trombonist Curtis Fuller, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Cedar Walton, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Joe Chambers--is a great example of modern jazz at its best. MODE FOR JOE was recorded during a time of sweeping musical changes due to developments in free jazz, soul jazz, and even early experiments with fusion. It was a time when the bluesy and funky leanings of hard-boppers were giving way to more individualized contemporary approaches. One of the best examples of this shift, MODE FOR JOE sounds more like the experimental work of Branford Marsalis than the groovy musings of Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers.
The last track on MODE FOR JOE, "Free Wheelin'," is the only dyed-in-the-wool hard-bop tune heard here. Other than that, this outing's mostly up-tempo songs serve as vehicles for solos. Henderson himself proves that the template for players such as Marsalis, Joe Lovano, and Joshua Redman was invented a generation earlier, as evidenced on "A Shade of Jade," "Black," and others, making this one of the sax legend's most intriguing albums.
This is part of the "Rudy Van Gelder Edition" series.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on January 27, 1966. Originally released on Blue Note (BLP 4227). Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather.
Personnel: Joe Henderson (tenor saxophone); Lee Morgan (trumpet); Curtis Fuller (trombone); Bobby Hutcherson (vibraphone); Cedar Walton (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Joe Chambers (drums).

Joe Henderson Mode For Joe Songs Mode For Joe Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) JOE HENDERSON!!!! God bless NO Billy Higgins on this one! GREAT SESSION!!!! Joe Chambers for PRESIDENT!!!! Submitted by najponk (Prague) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 29 of 29 found this helpful.
Decent 5th by Joe H. Not quite as favorable as "Inner Urge," Joe's 4th album, and first without Dorham, but it is one that cooks anyway with the help of Cedar Walton, Ron Carter, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, and Joe Chambers. Oh, and Bobby Hutcherson on vibes. I'm not crazy about vibes, but it's a good album anyway.

For ADAM'S APPLE Wayne Shorter returned to the simple quartet format for the last time in his solo career. This date from 1966 shows the saxophonist firmly between his modal style of the early '60s and his more experimental avant-garde period that was to come with albums like SCHIZOPHRENIA and SUPER NOVA. The effect of Shorter's membership in Miles Davis' legendary group ...

$10.85 Many of Astrud Gilberto's later albums focus on bossa nova interpretations of jazz standards and pop songs, but 1967's LOOK TO THE RAINBOW consists primarily of Portuguese-language sambas and cariocas, many from the pen of the great Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim. Gilberto's version of Jobim's "Bim Bom" is the definitive interpretation of this much-recorded song. ...
| | Lee Konitz Dialogues CD (1998) Import
Mode For Joe album
$13.35 On the alto saxophone Lee Konitz has been an undisputed master, and now in his 70s, he shows no signs of slowing down. His fresh, rambling melodicism is ever-present and strong. For this recording he is inspired and summarily has the favor returned by his excellent Netherland-based rhythm section of pianist Bert Van den Brink, bassist Hein Van de Geyn, and drummer Hans van Oosterhout. They play with keen spirit, telepathic notions, and musical brilliance behind the always sharp Konitz. It's also important to note that this session was done in one sitting. Of the 11 tracks, nine are standards, including the obligatory version of "All the Things You Are" that Konitz reharmonizes and calls "Thingin'." This "thing" has Konitz laying out until the second bridge chorus, well past Van de Geyn's bass solo. The majority of the pieces are done in easy swing fashion, and there are many passages where just piano and alto stand alone (the intro of "Yesterdays," the entire "Moonlight in Vermont") where Van den Brink hits a stride mood while Konitz touches on stratospheric high tones, or the section right before the coda during a lighter than usual "Cherokee," the rhythm dropping out and the other two marveling at each other's wares. "Lover Man" is done as an easy waltz but has a distinct sense of urgency, with the trio, especially Van de Geyn digging ...

The generous four-disc collection STEPPIN' OUT draws from the same 1972 British tour that's documented on the classic EUROPE '72 album, but this 2002 release delves even deeper into those archives. It was a unique time for the band; keyboardist Keith Godchaux had just arrived, but founding organist/singer/harmonica player Pigpen ...
