Ralph McTell was at the forefront of a British singer-songwriter movement in the late '60s and early '70s that drew more from American roots music and less from the traditions of the U.K., creating a leaner, more working-class balladry. Over the years McTell has been anthologized more than a few times, yet few single disc collections have really been able to capture the scope of his massive career. THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION seeks to be just what its title suggests, but skips over the first few years of his career and collects sides recorded between 1974 and 2001.
There's a lot to cover here and, while sadly omitting much from his mid-'70s critical peak, the compilation democratically includes much from the '80s and '90s--long after he stopped selling out Royal Albert Hall.
