Is This the "Hidden" Rachmaninov?
This recording of the so-called "lesser" pieces of orchestral work by Rachmaninov is first class: well recorded, beautiful sound, great presence, and shaped to a "T" by Maestro Polyansky. I have nothing by him in other recordings, but I will certainly search him out from now on. The Rock and The Isle of the Dead are almost popular, but not quite. Why not? These are gorgeous works; very romantic and lush and with those hauntingly beautiful themes that Rachmaninov seemed to come up with time and time again. The Isle of the Dead is called Symphonic Poem after A. Boecklin. This is a painting of Boecklin's idea of the Isle of the Dead (presumably in the midst of the River Styx?). Look up the picture on Google and look at it while playing the music! Simply amazing how he conjured the feeling of the painting into sound, timbre and rhythm. Prince Rostislav is another wonderful piece based on a legend related by Tolstoy. Again, knowing the story and hearing the music makes you aware of what a tremendous soul Rachmaninov had, and how he used his sensitivity to create sound paintings. Recommended to the romantic music lover, and to the jaded who are tired of hearing pedestrian recordings. This one will make you happy you purchased it.
