| | O B Buchana I Can't Stop Drinkin' CD (2005)
Ain't Nothing Wrong
$13.79 As the title suggests, I Can't Stop Drinkin' is a little heavier than O.B. Buchana's earlier albums, closer to a modern reinterpretation of classic electric Chicago blues than the lightweight retro-soul of its immediate predecessor, Shake What You Got! Buchana isn't really a bluesman in terms of his singing voice, which is a smooth and soulful croon in the classic Stax Records style, but there's more grit to these nine songs (plus a superfluous remix of album opener "Stage in the Sky" tacked on the end) than has been Buchana's previous wont, a tougher and more guitar-oriented style. This is still primarily a soul album, however; at day's end, this is far closer to Robert Cray's Strong Persuader than, say, Howlin' Wolf. That said, songs like "I'm Ready to Get Nude" and "I'm Gonna Party Alone" (which, amusingly, are right next to each other in the album's middle, like some kind of oddball song suite) crackle with energy in a way Buchana's previous work never ...
| | Steve Cropper Jammed Together CD (1988)
Ain't Nothing Wrong
$9.69 While this is not nearly as essential as some other Stax wax, it has a loose, raffish appeal and never falls into the murk of a boring super-session chopsfest. These guys were simply havin' fun with some standard soul/R&B covers (e.g. "What'd I Say," "Baby What You Want Me To Do") and some wide-open originals, kickin' back with some serious riffin'. Cropper proffers his usual intense, simplistic soloing, while King swoops and dives in a stringbending fury. The added plus is the silky smooth near-falsetto of Pop Staples, whose vocal on "Tupelo" is suitably eerie... ~ John Dougan, Option 20_88

| | Edge Of Sanity Nothing But Death Remains CD (1991)
Ain't Nothing Wrong
$16.05 While Edge of Sanity didn't break any new ground on this 1991 debut, the group exhibited a certain flair that's hard to come by in the death metal arena. Solid throughout, this eight-song release had a strong impact among metal enthusiasts with its consistent, rather colorful, if not untraditional music. The low, torturous vocals that play a large role in defining any real death metal band are never abandoned during Nothing but Death Remains. This textural stasis is heartily matched by the perpetually buzzing guitars. Together with some capable drumming, the whole concoction works nicely on standout tracks like the well-grooved "Angel of Distress" and the hyper-syncopated "Human Aberration." There are only a few dull moments, and they ...
