||DT gets more modern, more heavy|
This is, in my opinion, Dream Theater's strongest album start to finish. While there have been better DT songs than the ones on this album, this is the best COLLECTION of songs. Not one skipper in the bunch, at least for me. If you like Dream Theater's heavier songs, such as "Pull Me Under", "Caught In A Web", "Glass Prison", etc., you will probably like this disc very much as it is by far the harshest, heaviest sounding DT album yet. Almost every song contains at least one killer, metallic riff, and many of them have several great riffs. There are moments where you could swear you were hearing eighties-era Metallica or Megadeth. Fans of those bands that long for the days of Master Of Puppets and Rust In Peace would do well to pick this album up. Even James Labrie's voice, which I have always been somewhat split on, is angrier and more visceral than I have heard in the past. Oh, and if there are any fans like myself who think "Glass Prison" (from Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence) is the most arse-kicking song they've ever heard, there is a sequel on this album called "This Dying Soul". Now some fans have complained that Dream Theater is selling out with this album since it does contain parts that sound a bit like modern rock (a la Tool, Disturbed, etc.), but DT can do that kind of music and still add a very "prog" edge that those other bands (probably) are not capable of. I give this album 5 stars (I would give it 4 1/2 if I could, but it is closer to a 5 than a 4). If you like DT, get this!!

||Songs are just too damn long|
After listening to this CD I remember why I'm not a big prog metal fan. The title of this CD should be "The Songs Never End." Some bands can pull off 7 or 8 minute songs. Iron Maiden comes to mind. How many classic 10 to 15 minutes songs do you know (and like.) Like most prog bands DT lays down 2 minutes of good music, followed by 5 minutes of musical masterbation, 2 minutes good music, 5 minutes jerking off. If I had produced the CD the only thing I would have done is cut 2 or 3 minutes out of every song. It would have been so much better.
