TRAIN OF THOUGHT continues the legacy of the progressive metal legends, with all the requisite superhuman metallic musicianship that their fans have come to expect. This outing continues in the heavier mode that began with 2002's SIX DEGREES OF INNER TURBULENCE, reaching even further into darker, personal lyrical themes.
Guitars are the dominant expressive voice here, with keyboards scaled considerably back from the signature Dream Theater sound. Band members Mike Portnoy (drums) and John Petrucci (guitar) continue their do-it-yourself production approach, opting for recording venues on their native Long Island (much of the band's album work has taken place in upstate New York at Bear Tracks and Little Bear Studios). "As I Am" and "This Dying Soul" at times borrow generously from Metallica, featuring that band's well-known use of tri-tones, and vocalist James LaBrie even tries his hat at some Hetfield-isms. Possibly due to Petrucci's tenure on the G3 Tour (with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai), TRAIN finds him returning to Dream Theater wielding an even more lethal guitar soloing style. Of all the new tracks, the instrumental "Stream of Consciousness" sounds in closest proximity to the band's earlier material, and, for longtime fans, this bodes well for their future efforts.

Progressive Metal at some of it's finest This album is a really solid effort from Prog. Rock masters "Dream Theater". It's probably their most tight and cohesive work to date, and it's definitely their most heavy. The first track is set up in a very traditional, non-progressive kind of way, which is uncharacteristic of the band. However, the song is nothing short of astonishing with solid instruments and an amazing chorus, with some great hooks. Everything from that point on is entirely progressive, and is what you've come to expect from these guys, but this time it's all heavier. Nothing to complain about on this album, but you might not listen to it a billion. However, with progressive music you tend to listen to it over spread out periods, and this one you'll keep popping back in even after other albums have lost their appeal. A great album. DT gets more modern, more heavy This is, in my opinion, Dream Theater's strongest album start to finish. While there have been better DT songs than the ones on this album, this is the best COLLECTION of songs. Not one skipper in the bunch, at least for me. If you like Dream Theater's heavier songs, such as "Pull Me Under", "Caught In A Web", "Glass Prison", etc., you will probably like this disc very much as it is by far the harshest, heaviest sounding DT album yet. Almost every song contains at least one killer, metallic riff, and many of them have several great riffs. There are moments where you could swear you were hearing eighties-era Metallica or Megadeth. Fans of those bands that long for the days of Master Of Puppets and Rust In Peace would do well to pick this album up. Even James Labrie's voice, which I have always been somewhat split on, is angrier and more visceral than I have heard in the past. Oh, and if there are any fans like myself who think "Glass Prison" (from Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence) is the most arse-kicking song they've ever heard, there is a sequel on this album called "This Dying Soul". Now some fans have complained that Dream Theater is selling out with this album since it does contain parts that sound a bit like modern rock (a la Tool, Disturbed, etc.), but DT can do that kind of music and still add a very "prog" edge that those other bands (probably) are not capable of. I give this album 5 stars (I would give it 4 1/2 if I could, but it is closer to a 5 than a 4). If you like DT, get this!!

A True Masterpiece I had never heard of Dream Theater but when I got the cd I was blown away expecially when it comes to the drums and the bass. Submitted by william91666 ((ex. "Hwllwood, VA, USA")) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Hearing is Believing I remember the first time that I heard Dream Theater's track, "Stream of Consciousness" from their CD, Train of Thought. The chord changes are innovative and the group is extremely tight in every aspect. Whether you're a guitarist, a vocalist, or a drummer, treat yourself to some great music that's on the wild but complex side. You'll definitely thank yourself! Submitted by Michael (Mt.
