| | Her Space Holiday Young Machines CD Her Space Holiday Discography of CDs
(3 Customer Reviews)
'The Young Machines' is a ten-song encapsulation of a year on the edge & Her Space Holiday's most complete & personal release. Mush Records. 2003.
Marc Bianchi has long been self-conscious about his vocals. In fact, on The Young Machines he even brings it to listeners' attention. "Like that kid who asked me if I knew I couldn't sing/That's like asking a blind man if he knows that he can't see," he sobs on "Meet the Pressure." It's not as bad as he thinks, though his soft vocals may still need some fine-tuning. And boy, does he grieve over girlfriends in "Girl Problem" and "My Girlfriend's Boyfriend." Bianchi may be as gloomy as ever, but after moving from California to Texas and from Tiger Style to Mush Records, Her Space Holiday maintains its lush IDM-powered indie pop. The synthetic string arrangements, most notably on "Sleepy California," supply heartfelt bliss, as Bianchi's classical music influence is fully explored. "Tech Romance" joins lovely violins with hip-hop beats, further developing Bianchi's production skills. "The Luxury of Loneliness" is gracefully ambient, but with dismal confessions such as "I'm losing all my friends," someone should keep an eye on this guy. ~ Kenyon Hopkin
Her Space Holiday: Marc Bianchi.
Entertainment Weekly (10/24/03, p.107) - "...The San Francisco native creates rueful songs about what goes on behind closed doors--the quiet, fumbling moments that are as intimate as Bianchi's velvety pop-and-click-scapes..." - Rating: A- Q (12/03, p.129) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Raw emotion made flesh. Constructed from a barrage of splintered drums, dreamy guitars and sombre vocals, there are some beautiful moments here..." Magnet (11/03, p.96) - "...THE YOUNG MACHINES is the best thing HSH has ever done. While his previous albums idled in fluttery, lulling atmospherics, the new one moves..." Young Machines Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) Beautiful lyrics, amazing indie band I love Her Space Holiday. They have funky electronic beats and smooth sexy and soulful lyrics. And a lead singer with an even smoother voice. Submitted by Tiffany ^_^ (El Portal, Ca) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Young Machines album
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When ...
| | Drive-By Truckers Southern Rock Opera CDs (2001) Digipak
Young Machines CD music
$11.99 A sprawling two-disc set, the Drive-By Truckers' SOUTHERN ROCK OPERA is a cracked masterpiece that's enjoyable on several different levels. Hipsters might enjoy the giggly premise of a two-disc set devoted to a slightly altered retelling of the rise and fall of 1970s Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd. Progressive rock ...

| | Keane Hopes & Fears CD (2004)
Young Machines songs
$11.89 Often compared to countrymen Coldplay and Radiohead, the UK-based trio Keane plays a similarly majestic, sweeping blend of pop-informed rock music. Fueling the comparisons is the fact that lead vocalist Tom Chaplin makes heavy use of the same kind of Jeff Buckley-esque falsetto and emotion-filled wails favored by Chris Martin and Thom Yorke. On HOPES AND FEARS's epic tracks such as "She Has No Time," however, Keane takes the more dramatic elements of the aforementioned bands' sounds and magnifies them, creating piano- and synthesizer-driven cinematic soundscapes dripping with quiet heartache and existential angst. In addition, Keane incorporates minimalist trip-hop beats, which, in combination with Chaplin's strong pop melodies, evoke a male-led Portishead jamming with the Raspberries. One of the most sonically atmospheric groups of the Britpop scene, Keane ignores the notion of traditional guitar-based rock music ...
| | Mark Lanegan Bubblegum CD (2004)
Young Machines album
$12.19 In between the release of FIELD SONGS and its follow-up, BUBBLEGUM, former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan sang for hard-rock heroes both old (a reunited MC5) and new (Queens of the Stone Age), gaining both fans and famous friends in the process. Thus, all eyes were on Lanegan for BUBBLEGUM, which features guest shots by everyone from PJ Harvey and Queens leader Josh Homme to Izzy Stradlin and Duff McKagan of Guns N' Roses. Fortunately, all this attention doesn't seem to have fazed the sandpaper-voiced singer; despite the guest list, BUBBLEGUM is as dirty, gritty, and raw as anything in his catalog.

Young Machines CD music
$13.49 Lil Scrappy was already a certified Dirty South superstar (having come up strong under the tutelage of Crunk virtuoso Lil Jon, and recorded alongside fellow Atlanta acts like Trillville) before he signed to 50 Cent's G-Unit South label. His first album for the budding sub-label, BRED 2 DIE BORN 2 LIVE, represents a maturation of sorts for Scrap. ...
| | Rachel Sweet Fool Around CD (1992) Reissue
Young Machines music CDs
$9.99 An unlikely member of the Stiff Records stable, Rachel Sweet was a brassy, big-voiced teenager from Akron, Ohio who nevertheless won over the very British, very punky label with her chutzpah and good taste in songs. This 1977 debut album--reissued and remastered in 2007--made a splash on both sides of the Atlantic, with a variety of pop styles suited to Sweet's emotive voice: there's countrified pop (Elvis Costello's "Stranger in the House"), updated Motown ("B-A-B-Y"), and big-beat new wave ("Who Does Lisa Like?"). Perhaps this reissue will persuade Sweet to come out of musical retirement and serve up some more great music from an adult perspective.
In 1978, during one of his many visits to the US, Stiff founder Dave Robinson met producer/writer Liam Sternberg who introduced him to the thriving alternative music scene in Akron ...
| | Spirit Family That Plays Together CD (1968) (Import) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Germany
Young Machines songs
$18.79 Spirit's second album continued the band's melding of rock, folk, and jazz elements. It includes the group's biggest hit, "I Got a Line on You," which still sounds fresh decades after its release. Producer Lou Adler brought in noted jazz arranger Marty Paich to orchestrate a number of the set's songs, including the dazzling "Aren't You Glad," which features fuzzy and sustained guitar notes flying through a classically rendered piano figure. Underneath, a bed of strings drifts in like weather, powered by a propulsive beat and shower of hooks. As is the case with Spirit's self-titled debut, THE FAMILY THAT PLAYS TOGETHER finds Spirit at the exuberantly confident upswing of its career. This winning original lineup stayed together for two more albums (CLEAR and the masterly TWELVE DREAMS OF DR. SARDONICUS) before disbanding.
On this, the second Spirit album, the group put all of the elements together that made them the legendary (and underrated) band that they were. Jazz, rock & roll, and even classical elements combined to create one of the cleanest, most tasteful syntheses of its day. The group had also improved measurably from their fine debut album, especially in the area of vocals. The album's hit single, "I Got a Line on You," boasts especially strong harmonies as well as one of the greatest rock riffs of the period. The first side of this record is a wonderful and seamless suite, and taken in its entirety, one of the greatest sides of Los Angeles ...
