(8 Customer Reviews)
Though its cover art and title allude to Legend (1978), Poco's only real blockbuster album and last of any true merit, Running Horse, reaches back no further than the group's last studio album, 1989's Legacy, a cobbled together reunion album produced in part by Richard Marx. The production on Running Horse is equally weak, tentative, and thin, with dated highly guitar tones and studio feel. Surprisingly little of founder Rusty Young's famous pedal steel work is evident, odd considering his prowess on that instrument helped introduce it to the non-country world (Greg Leisz bow down). It's as if the alt-country explosion of the mid-'90s never happened. With so many groups owing a debt to Poco, it's hard to understand why while listening to Running Horse. All that said, Young and guitarist Paul Cotton's songs display charming honesty and rich emotional depth, more so than most any mainstream country release could muster. "Every Time I Hear That Train" does feature some fine harmonies, but it's a pale glimpse. Even without a major-label deal and much technical support, they could have done much better. Little Feat alum Craig Fuller appears as a guest and co-writer. ~ John Duffy

Running Horse Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews A GREAT COMEBACK! I also stumbled across news of the release of this new Poco album and have been VERY pleasantly surprised! This is an awesome collection of songs in the vintage Poco country/rock/pop vein. This album features necomer, Jack Sundred, on bass and vocals. According to the liner notes, Sundred was a life-long fan of the band and you can tell from his contribution that he is truly excited about the opportunity to take Poco into the next generation! This collection of tracks features some nice upbeat songs reminiscent of the "Legacy" album, as well as some haunting ballads. GREAT STUFF! Country Rock Don't Get No Better Than This!!! These guys pioneered the style and kept
the band alive and exiting for decade after decade! Through personel changes and several labels, they've not only survived but they've done what few other bands in any genre can do. They've maintained outstanding music and continued to sound new! This is as good or better than anything they've done! Jack Sundred's vocals give the band a whole new flavor. His songwriting skills are top notch and he fits in with these guys perfectly.
Don't hesitate to jump on this one! Submitted by soulsurfer (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Neil Young On The Beach CD (1974) Remastered
Running Horse CD music
$8.99 After working his way through loss and chaos on the brilliant TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT (recorded in 1973, but not released until 1975), Neil Young deftly exorcised any lingering demons with 1974's ON THE BEACH. The album opens with the saunter of the aptly titled "Walk On," followed by the utterly gorgeous, Wurlitzer-tinged "See the Sky about to Rain."
The set also features a trio of scathing songs--"Revolution Blues," "Vampire Blues," and "Ambulance Blues"--that address issues important to Young, both social and personal. It is good to hear Young back with such bite and vitriol, especially after the broken desperation of TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. But while ON THE BEACH is edgy and deeply felt, it also manages to sound liberating and relaxed, with glimmers of hope and humor peeking through the spare, evocative ...
| | American Flyer/Spirit Of A Women CD (2004)
Running Horse music CDs
$13.59 Originally released on United Artists. Includes liner notes by Richie Unterberger.
American Flyer has long been a favorite of singer/songwriter, L.A. country-rock, and '70s soft rock aficionados, partially because of the group's supergroup status, but chiefly because the music they made was very, very good. That pedigree was indeed impressive, with the four members consisting of former Pure Prairie League member Craig Fuller, Eric Kaz of the Blues Magoos, Doug Yule of the Velvet Underground, and Steve Katz, formerly of Blood, Sweat & Tears -- maybe not Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in terms of marquee name recognition, but surely a collection of gifted and respected singer/songwriters who complemented each other nicely. While they had some modest success with their George Martin-produced 1976 eponymous debut, they had a difficult time breaking into a larger audience, even though their music fit neatly into the L.A. soft rock scene, equal parts country-rock and tuneful popcraft. While American Flyer didn't storm up the charts, it was a promising start, but unfortunately ...

| | Poco Bareback At Big Sky CD (2005)
Running Horse album
$11.15 The "bareback" in the title partially alludes to the acoustic/predominantly unplugged nature of this live album. It's also recorded in front of a frequently sedate audience of Poco family and friends. The atmosphere is not surprisingly homey and loose, with terrific harmonies from Paul Cotton and Rusty Young, the only two Poco originals left. It's a rather odd combination of almost hits, ...

$13.55 In his sixth decade of playing the blues, Guitar Shorty returns with the duly claimed I Go Wild. These 13 cuts cover gritty soul/blues the way Shorty would play 'em on any given Saturday night in any number of blues joints around the world. Shorty has not mellowed with age. One of the strong points of I Go Wild is Shorty's ability to translate the exhilaration ...
