| | Larry Gittens Dual Identity CD Larry Gittens Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The veteran trumpeter and keyboardist made his mark on pop music playing for years with Stevie Wonder and Kool & the Gang, but his smooth jazz-oriented debut reflects influences far beyond R&B. This might be disappointing for fans expecting loads of funk (who will be appeased with the chunkier grooves of "One 4 Mo"), but those who appreciate more subtle jazz and Brazilian music will appreciate it. Gittens and his band immediately seduce listeners with the Jobim influence of the frisky samba "Moon Over Sonoma," which finds his restrained flügelhorn drifting sweetly over Rob Bacon's bright acoustic strumming. "Let Me Love You" is a more romantic excursion along these lines, adding muted trumpet and the lovely soprano sax harmony of Michael Lington. An obvious tribute to the Crusaders' pianist, "Joe's Sample" blends light funk, playful female vocals, and Najee's lush guest flute lines with Gittens' tremendous versatility on trumpet, organ, and Fender Rhodes. Gittens also has a strictly romantic side, displayed with cool affection on the dreamy and atmospheric "Town by the Bay." Pop fans will also enjoy his trippy, ambient percussive twist on "Good Vibrations," which features an organ foundation and a drum line that grows louder by the second. The disc would be stronger without all of the fine but ultimately unremarkable vocal tracks. ~ Jonathan Widran

Dual Identity
$38.09 DREAMS is a 4-CD box set compiling in chronological order tracks by the Allman Brothers Band, as well as tracks by bands featuring one or more member of the Allman Brothers Band and solo performances by Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts.
Recorded between 1966 & 1988. Includes a 32-page illustrated booklet and liner notes by John Swenson.
Like nearly all box sets, DREAMS has plenty to recommend it-and a few nagging drawbacks. The set's chief shortcoming is its two conflicting goals: providing an overview of the Allmans' history, thus attracting buyers seeking the ultimate hits package, and including enough unreleased tracks and rarities to appeal to the band's most devoted fans. As a result, DREAMS is neither the definitive Allman Brothers collection ...
| | Poco Forgotten Trail (1969-74) CDs (1990)
Dual Identity
$15.29 This compilation contains 38 songs, including many new remixes from original master tapes, 6 previously unreleased songs, alternate versions of 3 others, and a comprehensive 36 page booklet, with historic liner notes and photos.
This excellent two-disc collection captures Poco's finest moments from the days when they were laying down the template for all the country-rock music that was to follow. It's hard to remember, but when the Eagles first hit the scene, they were thought by many to be a Poco-wannabe band. Listen to this set and you'll hear why. The Forgotten Trail (1969-1974) culls tracks from Poco's first eight albums, as well as unreleased cuts ...

Dual Identity
$31.45 HELLO NASTY won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Intergalactic" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
Limited edition digipack contains a bonus disc with four bonus tracks: "Hail Sagan (Special K)," "Body Movin' (Fatboy Slim Remix)," "Intergalactic (Prisoners Of Technology)," and "Peanut Butter & Jelly."
On their fifth album and first proclamation in four years, the Beasties pledge allegiance to the next millennium while rocking out old-school stylee. Instead of pretentiously haphazard schizophrenia, Adrock, Mike D and MCA mold Run DMC boasts, Lee Perry dub freestyles, and introspective acoustic strumming into the best album-cum-mix-tape of the first half of '98. NASTY is the true successor to their sampledelic fantasia PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, as realized by craftsmen looking to do more than just get crazy with the sonic cheese whiz.
"Super Disco Breakin'," "Body Movin'," etc. are all first-rate party jams that the trio ...

Dual Identity
$20.09 This 1969 album from bluesy psychedelic Japanese band Apryl Fool features nine English-language tracks, including a cover of Bob Dylan's "Pledging My Time."
The Apryl Fool was a very accomplished late-'60s band from Japan whose lone, self-titled album is a great mixture of hard psych and blues-rock. Their best-known track is probably "The Lost Mother Land, Pt. 1," which was featured on the Japanese volume of QDK's Love, Peace and Poetry ...

Dual Identity
$12.89 Switching from his usual partners, the NW Prevailing Winds, Phil Kelly takes on a new collective of musicians here, the SW Santa Ana Winds. The move is from Seattle to Los Angeles physically, and similarly for the musical aesthetic. Despite the core sound being determined by Kelly's arrangements, the players surrounding him (with the exception of NW trumpeter Jay Thomas) change to a slightly more dramatic tone. The compositions are an intriguing mix of originals and standards, all rearranged as needed for the big-band setting. Duke Pearson's "Jeannine" opens up the album with a catchy old-school feel thanks to the almost movie-score sound of the band. This is followed by a large-scale tribute of sorts to Monk, with a deep blues inflection straight out of a smoky juke joint and ...
