(1 Customer Review)
Iron & Wine was one of the surprises of 2002. The Creek Drank the Cradle was a lo-fi melancholic gem of a record that drew apt comparisons to classic bedroom pop artists like Lou Barlow and Sebadoh, the Mountain Goats, and Nick Drake. Sam Beam, the man behind Iron & Wine, possesses a honey-soft voice that caresses his literate lyrics so very gently and a dense guitar style that fills up space without ever playing a wrong note. So often voice-and-guitar records can begin to sound monotonous, and Iron & Wine never even approaches that shortcoming. The Sea & the Rhythm is a five-track EP made up of songs recorded at the same time as Creek. Low-key, melancholy, and unfailingly beautiful, all the songs are good enough to have been on the album. "Beneath the Balcony" and "Jesus the Mexican Boy" have the crispest melodies; "Someday the Waves" is the song that will stick with you the longest. It sounds like a lost Crosby, Stills & Nash track, only without hippie-ish lyrics and with only one guy creating the towering vocal harmonies. The Sea & the Rhythm is a lovely stopgap to help ease the painful wait for the next Iron & Wine album -- 21 minutes of sweet, quiet pain. ~ Tim Sendra
Sam Beam returns with a follow-up EP to 2002's acclaimed debut The Creek Drank the Cradle. The five songs contained here, 'Beneath The Balcony', 'The Sea & The Rhythm', 'The Night Descending', 'Jesus The Mexican Boy' & 'Someday The Waves', have been culled from the same batch of bedroom recordings from which the first album sprang. Sea And The Rhythm album
$11.65 One of the most lauded albums of 2002, THE CREEK DRANK THE CRADLE has the ability to stun with its spare beauty. Under the alias of Iron & Wine, Floridian singer/songwriter Sam Beam unveils a rustic 11-song debut here that brings to mind a Southern Gothic Nick Drake. Recorded solely by Beam at home, the disc features minimal instrumentation (primarily acoustic guitar) and a lo-fi sound that's used to striking effect. This bare-bones setting spotlights Beam's high, clear, often-whispered vocals and his evocative lyrics, which conjure up thieving birds, daunting mountains, and melancholy church-goers.

$11.99 Initial pressings of OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS comes with a 4-song bonus CD.
While Sam Beam's self-recorded first outing as Iron & Wine, THE CREEK DRANK THE CRADLE, features a hushed bedroom atmosphere, his second full-length album, OUR ENDLESS NUMBERED DAYS, invites listeners into a slightly larger living room. Here there's enough space for an outside producer (Brian Deck) and additional musicians (including Sam's sister Sara on harmony vocals). Though Beam's musical palette has broadened to occasionally include drums, bass, and various stringed instruments, the spare, Southern Gothic tone remains intact, thanks to his distinctive, whispered vocals ...

Sea And The Rhythm music CDs
$11.89 This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines, and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems. Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end ...

$13.69 Supported by most of the musical crew from the Songs of Betrayal album, Johnny Indovina leads Human Drama through an excellent, fascinating set of old and new songs on 14,384 Days Later, demonstrating that the near-obsessive focus he brings to his music in the studio is equally matched in concert. The unquestioned revelation lies with all the Feel-era tunes, here given truly wonderful renditions and arrangements that leave the overwrought studio versions well in the dust. "Death of an Angel" gives a new, prominent place to electric violin courtesy of Jamil Szmadzinski, who carries out ...
