Bringing both Latin rhythms and free jazz influences into his sound, John McNeil's This Way Out finds the trumpeter working in Spain with two young local musicians, bassist Giulia Valle, and tenor saxophonist Gorka Benitez, along with stalwart drummer Joe Smith. The fresh surroundings invigorate McNeil's work, making This Way Out one of his more wide-ranging and interesting albums. The material, mostly originals by McNeil or Benitez, is solidly first-rate, and co-producers McNeil and Smith keep a tight rein on the length of the solos, preferring to explore a variety of rhythms and melodies rather than exploring just a few in depth. Highlights include "Dewey Defeats Truman," which features some extended free improvisation over a beat-less rattle of percussion that sounds as primitive as someone shaking a box full of bottle caps, and sounds very much like Jon Hassell's '70s work, and "West Coast Memories," a brief but delightful nod to Chet Baker and Gerry Mulligan over a light swing beat. ~ Stewart Mason

JazzTimes (2/04, p.145) - "[E]xtraordinary....That McNeil's writing is enormously sophisticated and a bit warped is clear from the first several bars of 'Mi Tio'." John McNeil This Way Out Songs This Way Out Review

This Way Out album
$15.05 With The Fall, Norah Jones completes the transition away from her smooth cabaret beginnings and toward a mellowly arty, modern singer/songwriter. Jones began this shift on 2007's Not Too Late, an album that gently rejected her tendencies for lulling, tasteful crooning, but The Fall is a stronger, more cohesive work, maintaining an elegantly dreamy state that's faithful to the crooner of Come Away with Me while feeling decidedly less classicist. Some of this could be attributed to Jones' choice of producer, Jacquire King, best-known for his work with Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon, but King hardly pushes Norah in a rock direction; The Fall does bear some mild echoes of Fiona Apple or Aimee Mann in ballad mode, but its arrangements never call ...
| | Harry Connick, Jr Your Songs CD (2009)
This Way Out CD music
$10.99 Much like 2001's SONGS I HEARD and 2004's ONLY YOU, 2009's YOUR SONGS finds vocalist/pianist Harry Connick, Jr. coming up with an urbane, passionate set of American popular standards and contemporary pop classics that he both performs and orchestrates. While his previous recordings leaned toward the classicist side--ONLY YOU featured songs of the '50s and '60s--YOUR SONGS features a more eclectic mix of standards and pop songs, with Connick's own lush orchestration lending an overall aesthetic of languid romanticism. To this end, Connick turns Billy Joel's "Just the Way You Are" into a kind of Herb Alpert-inspired '60s pop nugget and, conversely, the Beatles' 1964 classic "And I Love Her" gets a kind of '70s Latin lounge feel with classical guitar flourishes. ...

This Way Out music CDs
$9.29 Recorded live at Jazz Alley, Seattle, Washington on December 11 & 12, 1998. Includes liner notes by Howard Mandel.
Too many artists have gone their entire careers without providing any live albums, but that hasn't been a problem for Gene Harris whose live recordings from the 1980s and 1990s ranged from unaccompanied solo piano to big-band dates. Arguably, the best live album he gave listeners in the 1990s was Alley Cats; recorded live at Jazz Alley in Seattle on December 11-12, 1998, this CD finds Harris' working quintet (Harris on piano, Frank Potenza on guitar, Luther Hughes on bass, and Paul Kreibich on drums) joined by such accomplished soloists as Red Holloway (tenor sax), Ernie Watts (alto and tenor sax), and Jack McDuff (organ). Many inspired moments occur, and a 65-year-old Harris really goes that extra mile on gems ranging from Nat Adderley's "Jive Samba" and Benny Golson's ...
