Lynyrd Skynyrd: Johnny Van Zant (vocals); Rickey Medlocke, Hughie Thomasson (guitar, background vocals); Gary Rossington (guitar); Billy Powell (keyboards); Ean Evans (bass); Michael Cartellone (drums); Carol Chase, Dale Krantz Rossington (background vocals). Additional personnel: Kid Rock. Having endured the loss of yet another bandmember with the passing of original bassist Leon Wilkeson, Skynyrd picks up the pieces yet again and delivers the goods the way only it can. Lyrically, the band hasn't stretched out its list of topics in any new directions, but quite honestly, who cares? This is Skynyrd. This isn't music to study to or scratch your chin by -- this isn't the soundtrack to relaxing nights sipping instant coffee and talking about deep feelings. This is homegrown music that's about partying and rock & roll, with a little bit of contemplative soul-searching mixed in for good measure. The music is still top-notch, probably the best it's been since the early '90s. And while the obvious absence of Ronnie VanZant will forever haunt the group like a bad plague, his brother has more than adequately been up to the task -- filling those giant shoes with the same passionate dirt and grit in his vocals as Ronnie did all those years ago. The band is the same, still rocking harder than most even after all these years. And for once the phrase "bonus track" lives up to that title; a duet of "Gimme Back My Bullets" between Skynyrd and nu-metal spokesman of the moment Kid Rock is simply the icing on the cake. Easily Skynyrd's best work in years and a welcome return to form for one of rock's most treasured assets. ~ Rob Theakston Guitarist Gary Rossington and keyboardist Billy Powell might be the only founding members left in this incarnation of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but rest assured that the awesome legacy of these southern rock giants remains intact on VICIOUS CYCLE. Vocalist Johnnie Van Zandt continues to fill his late brother's shoes while former members of Blackfoot (Ricky Medlocke) and the Outlaws (Hughie Thomasson) keep the spirit of the South alive throughout this album released to commemorate the band's 30th anniversary. Still as down-home as when they first emerged from Jacksonville, Florida in the early '70s, the members of Skynyrd have penned songs about the working man ("That's How I Like It"), love of America ("Red White and Blue"), and the right to protect one's family ("Dead Man Walking".) Although original bassist Leon Wilkeson passed on during the recording of CYCLE, his spirit lives on via two tracks he played on before his death, the heartfelt "Lucky Man" and impassioned "The Way," and he's honored on the somber tribute "Mad Hatter." Skynyrd fan Kid Rock is the cherry on this southern rock sundae when he appears on a scathing bonus remake of the band's classic "Gimme Back My Bullets."

still going strong! the lynyrd skynyrd band has proven time and time again, since it's 1987 reformation, that they can still rock with the best of them.this version of the group, down to two original members following the 2001 death of bassist leon wilkeson, still holds true to the musical formula that propelled them to the top of the rock and roll mountain in the early seventies.this cd is one more reason why the new version of the band continues to please it's fans over and over again.the music is just plain fun to listen to,good old fashioned rock.fans will especially enjoy the track "madhatter",a moving tribute to the late great leon wilkeson.the bonus dvd includes a film montage of old home movies from the original line up set to the 1973 ballad "simple man",a real treat for all skynyrd fans. | | Hall & Oats H2o CD (1982) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Vicious Cycle
$7.89 Personnel: Daryl Hall (vocals, guitar, keyboards, synthesizer); John Oates (vocals, 6-string guitar, 12-string guitar, electric piano, drums); G.E. Smith (guitar); Randy Hoffman, Brian Doyle. Audio Mixer: Hugh Padgham. Liner Note Author: Ken Sharp. Photographer: Larry Williams . Private Eyes solidified Hall & Oates' status as one of the most popular acts in America in the early '80s, and with 1982's H2O, they capitalized on its success, delivering an album that turned out to bigger than its predecessor, as it climbed higher on the charts and launched three Top Ten singles with "Maneater," "One on One," and "Family Man." Bigger isn't necessarily better, though, and in comparison to the glistening pop of Private Eyes, H2O pales somewhat, coming across as a little too serious, with its ambitions just being a little too evident. Take the claustrophobic, paranoid "Family Man" -- covering an art rocker like Mike Oldfield suggests a far different agenda than crafting a tribute to the Temptations, and while "Family Man" isn't as key to the album as "Looking for a Good Sign" was to Private Eyes, it does indicate the relatively somber tone of H2O. Not that the album is a tortured dark night of the soul -- how could it be, when John Oates kicks off the second side with the proudly silly "Italian Girls"? -- but the production and performances are precise and deliberate, effectively muting the pop thrills that spilled over on its predecessor. Even if the album was recorded with Hall & Oates' touring band -- something that the duo and their co-producer Neil Kernon confirm in the excellent liner notes by Ken Sharp in the 2004 reissue -- H2O feels as if most songs were cut to a click track, and are just slightly too polished for their own good; when the productions open up a bit, the band still sounds terrific, but they never are given the opportunity to sound as big and bold as they do on Private Eyes. This, coupled with a few drawn-out duds (such as the vaguely atmospheric "At Tension") means H2O isn't quite as sharp and bracing as anything the duo had released since X-Static, and the fact that two of the best moments are huge hits -- the prowling "Maneater" and "One on One," perhaps the most seductive song Daryl Hall ever wrote -- may suggest that this is closer to singles-plus-filler than it really is. The best of the rest of H2O reveals that Hall & Oates are at a near-peak in their creativity, writing tuneful, soulful fusions of pop, soul, ...
