There was a time, back in the mid-'80s, when the name Clan of Xymox was spoken in the same breath as those of Cocteau Twins and Dead Can Dance, bands that epitomized a sort of ethereal pre-goth genre that was simultaneously soothing and challenging, and that inspired thousands (but not millions) of British and American teenagers to wear black lipstick and hide their eyes behind large and unsettling hairdos. Clan of Xymox never achieved the commercial success of Cocteau Twins or the critical success of Dead Can Dance, but unlike both of those bands, they're still making records. Their fourth album for the Metropolis label, Farewell, finds them continuing in a musical vein that the press materials describe, quite aptly, as dark goth electro. Song titles like "Cold Damp Day," "Dark Mood," "There's No Tomorrow," and "It's Not Enough" will probably give you a good idea of what to expect: deep voices, minor chords, thumping beats that refer to industrial music without embracing it. This is mood music for when you're in a bad mood, and it's not at all unattractive. Note particularly the relatively upbeat "Courageous" and nicely tuneful (if weakly sung) "Losing My Head." Recommended. ~ Rick Anderson
Nearly two years have passed since Clan of Zymox's last studio album, Notes From the Underground. The time was not wasted by no means, it was utilized for creating the next record and playing many packed venues. Farewell is the latest in the legacy of Clan Of Xymox & features 10 tracks. Metropolis. 2003.

Farewell Music Review Average Rating: (3.7 out of 5 stars) Just brilliant There’s something comforting about knowing that whatever comes and goes, there will always be a few bands out there that stay true to all things dark and sullen. The masters of dark electro-goth prove themselves again with note after note of their signature spooky elegance. The electronic elements of synthesiser and drum machine rhythm are met with choir samples and the distant chiming of bells, violin and mandolin, infusing all ten tracks with an unpretentious gothic-ness that has yet to be matched. Ronny Moorings delivers words of loss, change and regret in his baritone croon as the songs go between melancholy ballads and beat-filled numbers of a quicker BPM. This disc exemplifies music, mood and message and how all parts together work to create atmosphere. If ever there was a band who could master the gothic genre without getting lost in the whole aesthetic of it all, Xymox is it and they do it here beautifully. As far as catchy, moody goth music goes, they know the formula. They wrote the book on it. With infectious beats and all its moodiness, whether at home or on the dance floor, “Farewell” is another notch in their bedpost of stellar accomplishments. Submitted by D.J. Vanguard (L.A.) Good But not the Best I'm not sure why you title an ablum Farewell, unless it's your last album. I hope that's not the case. This album is good. It has some elements of the early years with 4AD. It's not their best since reforming but I like it. They really need to tour in the US. Submitted by Warren (Alexandria, VA, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
full of darkness One could maybe think that with the pass of the years, the quality of the works are going down. Indeed, it has happened to many artists. I could not say the same about Clan of Xymox who just released this jewell of the century XXI some months ago. "Farewell", with it's great album cover bring us the darkest side of the band (Farewell, Cold Damp Day) with lot of electronic arrangements in the songs and great rythms for dance (There's no tomorrow), to name some. Don't miss it.

Farewell album
$10.15 Listening to Clan of Xymox's self-titled LP is like entering a club of black-clad vampires in the mid-'80s. That's not meant as an insult; the album captures a certain time and place. The record epitomizes Ben Folds Five's hilarious discovery in "Battle of Who Could Care Less": "See I've got your old ID/And you're all dressed up like the Cure." This moody, atmospheric record is as dated as a bumper sticker from a "rock of the '80s" radio station. What once seemed cutting-edge is now a nostalgia trip, and for aging goths, Clan of Xymox is home sweet home. Clan of Xymox were never original; they always seemed to be picking from the leftovers of their predecessors: the Cure, Joy Division, Modern English, Dead Can Dance, and New Order. In other words, there are icy, throbbing keyboards; bummed-out vocals; chilly, robotic ...

Farewell album
$15.69 Remixes From the Underground is a two-disc set of remixes of Clan of Xymox's 2001 album, Notes From the Underground. With gothic dance music that combines Depeche Mode and Peter Murphy ("Anguish," remixed by Iris), new wave, electro-funk ("Something's Wrong," remixed by Angels & Agony), and industrial trance ("Number 1," remixed by Cut.Rate.Box), the record will probably seem strikingly eclectic to Xymox fans. Front 242 provides a satisfyingly experimental mix of "Anguish." Remixes From the Underground is designed for longtime followers of Clan of Xymox, a band that never really had the widespread recognition garnered by the Cure, Joy Division, and Depeche Mode. ~ Charles Spano

Farewell CD music
$12.39 SPLINTER MIDDLETONInfluenced by the writing styles of Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and Harlan Howard, Splinter Middleton began to write his own songs at 12 years old. When legendary Country Music Hall of Fame artist Mel Tillis heard Splinter sing during a show they did together at the Grand Palace in Branson, MO, Mel was very impressed. After a few more shows together, Splinter decided to take some of his original material to Mel see what he thought. Mel really liked the classic country sound he was hearing and offered to publish Splinter's songs on the Dreams Come True album which was completed in Mel's studio in 2005. Two of the songs off this album have been recorded in Nashville, TN by up and coming country music artist Kenyon Lockry. Splinter's self penned album, "Dreams Come True" is full of originality and style. Every song, from the witty" Tin Can" about a couple happily living in a mobile home, to the wistfulness of "Here Comes the Loneliness" is packed full of fiddle and ...
