||Another Harryhausen Great|
Valley of Gwangi film This film is probably one of Harryhausen's lesser-known greats. Valley of Gwangi review A turn-of-the-century wild west show, which has been losing business to Buffalo Bill's competition, opens at a small Mexican town. A ray of hope to the show appears in the form of a tiny horselike creature, supposedly the world's smallest horse. A scientist gets a look at the beast and declares it to be Eohippus, the earliest form of horse. (Personally, I don't believe in evolution, but it's regrettably difficult to watch any dinosaur movie without getting verbally pummeled by the word!) When asked where the Eohippus came from, the answer is the Valley of Gwangi; a mysterious place which the area's gypsies regard as the dwelling or spirit of evil. Naturally, the heroes disregard the warning and set out into the desert and soon find the Valley through a narrow cave. As the small group of cowboys steps into the light, they spy a creature one exclaims must be a "plucked ostrich", a Struthiomimus (much like the Gallimimus in Jurassic Park). Then in a scene obviously inspirational to JP, just as the cowboys approach the birdlike dinosaur, it is attacked by an Allosaurus (the three-fingered "cousin" of T. Rex). Needless to say, the cowboys are attacked by a succession of territorial saurians, and somehow manage to make it out of the Valley with the Allosaurus, dubbed "Gwangi," in a cage. In Kong-like fashion, the beast is put on display, and escapes in a delightfully predictable rampage of destruction. Harryhausen's effects are (as always) great, and there is a surprisingly convincing abduction scene of a small boy by a pterosaur. The acting by the leading lady is a bit unconvincing at times (I even suspect her voice was dubbed), but overall the performances are well done for the film's period.
