Never regarded as the artistic elite of the Madchester scene (although, of course, they were not actually from Manchester itself), the Inspiral Carpets have nevertheless produced a body of work which, if not paralleling the one-off impact of the Stone Roses, has marked them out as consistent achievers. The best of their albums are Life and this one, which maintains the group's traditions (a big organ sound, character-based lyrics, bad haircuts), yet also saw a bolder, more introspective songwriting effort, expanding on the narrative style expressed on their debut album.
Recorded at Ridge Farm, Surrey, England in November & December, 1991.
Inspiral Carpets: Tom Hingley (vocals); Graham Lambert (guitar); Clint Boon (organ, background vocals); Martyn Walsh (bass); Craig Gill (drums).

| | Rosanne Cash List CD (2009)
Beast Inside
$11.99 After the dark and chilling themes of 2006's BLACK CADILLAC, which saw Rosanne Cash dealing with the deaths of her mother, Vivian Liberto, her father, Johnny Cash, and her stepmother, June Carter Cash -- all of whom passed within a two-year span -- one might assume that her next project would move into an even deeper level of bleakness, but with THE LIST, it's immediately clear that she has instead found a more measured place to stand. It's a lovely and redemptive outing that looks back to go forward. When Cash turned 18, her father, alarmed that his daughter only knew the songs that were getting played on the radio, gave her a list of what he considered 100 essential American songs; Cash kept that list, and now she's drawn on it for this wonderfully nuanced outing that brims with a kind of redemptive timelessness. THE LIST is a renewal and a testament to life, and it belongs to her father as much as it belongs to her, a beautiful restatement ...

| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Beast Inside
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks ...

Beast Inside
$9.69 Every once in a while a singer/songwriter comes down the pike in the grand emotive tradition of Neil Young and Van Morrison. In the early 2000s, the quietly intense folk of Iron & Wine and the rootsy-experimental stylings of Sufjan Stevens continued that lineage. Ray LaMontagne, ...
