The title of Kirk Jones's second solo album, DECADE, refers to the fact it drops 10 years after his initial, monstrous explosion into the rap world as half of the New York duo Onyx whose hip-hop-channeling-hardcore BACDAFUCUP yielded the pop-crossover summer anthem "Slam." In 1993, Sticky Fingaz was nothing if not an unstoppable force, as the unrepentant former gang member used his guttural style to the fullest in a flow of unadulterated rage. Subsequently, he's become something of a well-regarded character actor and released a well-received solo record in 2000 before coming back around with DECADE.
DECADE's intro is a tribute to SF's mentor, the late Jam Master Jay, revealing Sticky Fingaz's twisted zen propelled by a steamroller attitude. While his growl of rage is slightly more refined this time around, he's as unabashed about his life as ever, as exemplified by the devastatingly mournful and resigned "I Love Da Streets," which opens with the confession "this may sound crazy but I love suffering," and features a skillful guest by his IN TOO DEEP co-star Omar Epps.
Not nearly as ambitious as Black Trash: The Autobiography of Kirk Jones, Sticky Fingaz' second album also isn't quite as compelling. Off Universal and now on D3 Entertainment -- a graveyard of sorts for former major-label artists -- the MC produces the bulk of the tracks along with DSP, though wiz Scott Storch takes over for a pair of tracks, both of which are unsurprising standouts. Despite a shortage of strong material and some uninspired production work, Sticky Fingaz remains a remarkable MC, and some might be pleased that he's relying less on gruff, in-your-face shouting and more on a menacing delivery that's kept to a relatively low-key and stern dynamic. Hopefully this will lead to better things. [A Japanese version added a bonus track.] ~ Andy Kellman

$38.65 It's telling that DO WHAT YOU WANT TO BE WHAT YOU ARE, Sony/Legacy's comprehensive, career-spanning Daryl Hall and John Oates box set, takes its title from a moderately successful mid-'70s single from the duo, written and recorded just as the group was hitting their creative stride. The slow Philly groove of "Do What You Want Be Who You Are" may have hearkened back to the duo's soul roots, side-stepping some of the outré pop experiments they had done just two years earlier on War Babies, but Hall & Oates took the title's sentiment to heart, blurring boundaries ...

$28.59 1991-1994Both seventeen years of age Linde Nijland & Annemarieke Coenders meet in 1991 and become friends. Soon they are singing together. They subscribe for the Dutch art- & music contest "De Kunstbende" in 1992 and become second at it's national music finals in Vredenburg (Utrecht). By now they are calling themselves "Ygdrassil". In 1993 they win the music contest "Pop= Prima" in Groningen. A year later Ygdrassil performs at the Dutch Noorderslag festival where the group strikes a lot of attention. When the jazz & pop label VIA offers them a contract, Linde and Annemarieke accept and start the recordings of their first album.1995-1996The debut album "Ygdrassil" is released in 1995. It consists of, for the greater part, self written songs. Their voices are mainly being accompanied on acoustic guitar, added by some a capella's. The CD contains some covers, such as songs of Leonard Cohen, Neil Young and Sinead O' Connor. In August the duo appears at the Dutch "Lowlands" festival. Meanwhile Linde and Annemarieke have started touring throughout The Netherlands. Over the years they will perform as a support-act of, for instance, Luka Bloom, Mary Black, Heather Nova, Anne Clarke and Tanya Donelly. 1997-1998After the succesful debut album Ygdrassil starts recording a second album. The CD "Pieces" is being released in the spring of 1997. It contains purely self written songs. Like the first album, "Pieces" receives very good reviews. After a CD-tour it remains silent for a while, since Annemarieke is graduating from her art studies . Meanwhile Linde is working on a solo project. Her poetic album "Visman", sung in Dutch, is released at the end of 1998. 1999-2000Annemarieke has finished her studies and Ygdrassil starts the recordings of a third album. This time, as opposed to the previous two albums, quite a few guest musicians do appear. When during the recordings their record company "VIA" is getting bankrupt, Ygdrassil is now on her own. Linde and Annemarieke decide to produce and release the album themselves and the CD "We visit many places" comes out in April 2000. It's released on their own "Real Harm" ...
