Soul'D Out album
$13.65 Lhasa's earlier work included arrangements that drew on ranchera and Gypsy music, as well as American, Canadian, and Mexican folk, French chanson, and pop. The international flavor is more subtle on LHASA, without vanishing entirely. The songs on the album all deal with love, usually of the obsessive, hopeless, and doomed variety, and even at her most seductive, as on the subtle rock/tango "The Lonely Spider," Lhasa's vocals hint at grief and despair. The song's Latin standup bassline and subtle chiming guitar combine with a muted tango beat to give the song a deeply melancholy air. "Is Anything ...

| | Jon Balke Siwan CD (2009)
Soul'D Out album
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's ...

| | Bill Laswell Lo. Def Pressure CD (2000)
Soul'D Out music CDs
$12.85 Lo. Def Pressure consists of two extended compositions (both over 20 minutes) from genre-expanding musician/composer/producer Bill Laswell. Featuring a group of percussionists (including the exceptional tabla player Zakir Hussain) and sound generators, the results are texture-heavy excursions into rhythm that combine ancient musical traditions with modern beat science. It's a meeting of old and new, East and West that has taken place on Laswell's recordings ever since talking drums and tablas met drifting new age ambience on 1988's Hear No Evil. With Lo. Def Pressure, however, he has proven that the same preoccupations can make ...

| | Gzowski Gziganes CD (2005)
Soul'D Out album
$13.15 John Gzowski is a musician of many interests. Some were instilled by studying with Alexina Louie, James Tenney, Ann Southam and Trichi Sankaran, to name a few, and some he just developed himself. Originally studying classical guitar, John switched to electric after developing a taste for rock and jazz. He played in many groups in the Queen Street scene in Toronto in the 80's, most notably the Garbagemen. Around the same time he began playing with some more experimental jazz groups, like Graeme Kirkland's group, Tom Walsh's N.O.M.A., Paul Cram's early groups and doing free improv work across the country. He then started listening to and playing world music's, performing Romany Gypsy music with the Altin Yildiz Orkestar, South African pop with Siyakha, Greek and Arabic music with Maza Meze, and North Indian flavoured jazz with Tasa, on instruments such as oud, tambouritsa, cumbuc, cello, and mandolin. His work in New Music includes playing with Hemispheres for over 6 years, concerts with New Music Concerts and the Canadian Electronic Ensemble. He has written for Array Music, the Evergreen Club Gamelan Ensemble and Hemisphere's. An interest in tuning and temperament lead to the building of several instruments ...
