Ian Carr records have long been difficult to find in the U.S., but tend to be worth the search. At the time that this LP was recorded, Carr was leading a quintet called Nucleus and was very much under the influence of fusion-era Miles Davis. With Brian Smith adding some capable tenor and soprano, the keyboards of Geoff Castle, electric bassist Bill Kristian and drummer Roger Sellers, Carr performs four lengthy group originals, including the 16-minute title cut. The dated music sometimes rambles, but does include some worthy trumpet solos and interesting vamps. ~ Scott Yanow

In Flagrante Delicto
$11.59 KEEP ON TRUCKIN' contains all the tracks from the original LP of the same title as well as 2 previously unreleased songs recorded in 1970.
Yet another rock band that emerged out of the copious student population of countercultural Wisconsin, Tongue spent ten years developing into one of the most road-savvy ensembles in the state. But Keep on Truckin' was recorded near the beginning of their career, thereby capturing the band during the early peak of their powers. That power doesn't always manifest itself on their sole album, but it remains an enjoyable effort. There are significant similarities between Tongue and fellow Wisconsin band Tayles. Tongue doesn't dip into the good-time roll of Tayles' music too often, but they do have a blues-based, organ-heavy sound that is primarily earnest while verging at times on the musically whimsical, as on songs like "Get Your Shit Together" and the fabulous "Jazz on the Rag," a falsetto beauty like nothing else on the album. On the quickie country interlude "Slap Her Down Again Paw," they even show a comical side. There are bits of country-rock and jugband music (the title track cover of Donovan), and Jerry Garcia personally complimented the band on their version of ...

| | Elevado Dedicated To The Memory CD (2005)
In Flagrante Delicto
$15.19 By leading off the band's debut album with a song called "Guess You Get Stuck in a Rut," Elevado appear to be attempting to ward off bad-luck demons. Whatever rituals they may have had to perform in preparation for recording this album, the black magic appears to have worked. It could easily be mistaken for a Camper Van Beethoven instrumental piece, and the production is simply gorgeous."Can't Delay" begins less conspicuously, but soon roars into a Television-like baroque-and-roll epic. Elevado could be dismissed as over-ambitious if they didn't pull of the songs so well. Regardless of how many instrumental tracks are recorded for a particular track, it is the strength of the songwriting that really makes this album."Sprung," is an especially strange song. The guitar nervously hiccups while Justin Sias half-speaks/half-sings "Wake up early / you're fit to survive / unconscious country / keep your faces alive." The song almost sounds like a long lost Bossanova B-side, but Elevado etch out their sound without borrowing too much from any one source. As with many of Sias' lyrics, these words are Spacey and at best half-understood by the listener. However, such a lyrical style best suits Elevado's space-age ...

In Flagrante Delicto
$31.39 The first full-length duet album by rapper Bow Wow and R&B singer Omarion, FACE OFF sounds more like a pair of buddies having fun and experimenting in the studio than a major album by either party, and that is a huge part of its charm. At a time when too many hip-hop albums take themselves far too seriously (call it the P. Diddy effect), 2007's FACE OFF harks back to the casual, lighthearted spirit of hip-hop's past. Highlights include "Girlfriend," the sly "Can't Get Tired of Me" and "Take Off Your Clothes," as well as the T-Pain-produced first single "He Ain't Gotta Know." FACE OFF was also released ...
