| | Spencer Davis Group Singles CD - Import Spencer Davis Group Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
The Spencer Davis Group is fondly remembered for their late-1960s singles that featured the deep soul vocals of Steve Winwood, then only a teenager. Singles like "Somebody Help Me," "Keep on Running," "Gimme Some Lovin'," and "I'm a Man" were solid R&B rockers, making The Spencer Davis Group one of the most explosive bands in the so-called British Invasion era. When Winwood left to form Traffic, the group (having lost one of the most distinctive voices in rock history) simply wilted away. This collection has all their hits, but also includes several early Traffic tracks like "Paper Sun," and Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright," making it really more of a Steve Winwood compilation. The final track is a bizarre, bombastic, near-mento song called "Incense," released by a group named the Anglos in 1969, supposedly featuring Winwood. He has denied having any involvement with the song, however, and one wonders why it is presented here. There are separate and more definitive collections available for both the Spencer Davis Group and Traffic, and the Anglos cut is, at best, a curio. ~ Steve Leggett

| | B B King Mr. Blues/Confessin' The Blues CD (2005) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Singles CD music
$18.79 This CD contains B.B. King's first ABC-Paramount studio efforts -- Mr. Blues (1962) and Confessin' the Blues (1965), respectively. While there are inevitable similarities between the projects, offering them back-to-back allows listeners an acute sense of King's rapid maturation and development during what was by all accounts the nexus of the guitarist/vocalist's career. The dozen-song Mr. Blues was a haphazard start for King with the contents taken from three different recording sessions in a 13-month period (March 1, 1962 through April 11, 1963). Based on the results, the artist was being presented as a blues shouter, supported by an antiquated big band and/or orchestra. Arguably the best of the lot comes from the Maxwell Davis led ensemble on the ...

| | Waylon Jennings Waylon Live: The Expanded Edition CDs (1976) Remastered
Singles songs
$15.89 WAYLON LIVE is part of Buddha Records' Original Masters series.
Recorded live at The Western Place, Dallas, Texas on September 25, 1974 and at The Opry House, Austin, Texas, February 26, 1974. Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle.
WAYLON LIVE was originally conceived as a double album, containing tracks from two 1974 performances. However, it was initially released (in 1976) as a single LP. This 1999 reissue (Buddha also did Waylon's discography proud with the re-release of the seminal HONKY TONK HEROES and others) finally sees WAYLON LIVE presented in all its 20-track glory. Waylon in his mid-'70s prime is a joy to hear, accompanied by the famed version of his band that includes steel wizard Ralph Mooney and drummer/right-hand man Richie Albright.
Coming off the genre-defining success of 1973's HONKY TONK HEROES, Waylon is at his roughest and rowdiest here. He comes charging out of the gate with a jolting, electrified version of Jimmie Rodgers' "T For Texas" and celebrates his infamy on the Willie Nelson-penned "Me and Paul." Preceding cowpunk by over a decade, he injects rock-influenced energy and rhythm into the country equation. Even such nods to western swing as "Bob Wills is Still the King" and "Big Ball in Cowtown" are full of the grit and fire synonymous with this golden period in Waylon's career.
Waylon Jennings' 1976 album Waylon Live is generally considered as one of the great live albums in country music -- and, when pressed, it's easy to make an argument that it's among the finest of the decade -- and Buddha's 1999 reissue seemed to be the final word on the record, since it restored the record to its scrapped original double-album running length, taking it from 11 to 20 songs. Just four years later, however, BMG Heritage issued Waylon Live: The Expanded Edition, which more than doubled its length to 42 songs over two discs. Most concerts don't last that long and it is true that this expanded Waylon Live isn't taken from just one gig; it was taken from three concerts in late September 1974: one show at the Western Place in Dallas on the 25th and two dates at the ...
