Following the demise of Wicklow Records in 2000, it looked for a while as if this album would never see the light of day in the U.S. But Northside stepped in, a very apt home as it is a label that specializes in Nordic music, and it's well worth the wait. Stripped-down, lean, and mean, Värttinä have come up with a concept album of sorts, dedicated to the sun goddess of Finnish myth. Somewhere along the line, the term "oriental" became politically incorrect. The term was in no way derogatory -- it simply referred to people from what used to be called the Orient (China, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, and Thailand), just as the term "Scandinavian" is applied to people from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, and Finland. But the language police took a disliking to the word (without justification), and now, the word Asian is generally applied to those who are from what was once known as the Orient. So when one sees the title Asian Groove, it is logical to assume that Putumayo means Asian as in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean, but Putumayo actually means Asian as in Indian and Pakistani. There are plenty of excellent compilations of traditional Indian and Pakistani music, but Asian Groove is totally modern in its outlook -- most of the artists combine Indian or Pakistani elements with modern funk, dance-pop, electronica, or reggae. Musically, the group are masters of fantasy-metal excess, but bereft of the Dungeons & Dragons hyperbole employed by similar artists. Gavin Sutherland offers 12 songs and an interlude on this solo effort recorded at Protston, Aberdeenshire, in 1998 and 1999 for the Netherlands-based Corazong label. Missing are the members of Quiver and brother Ian Sutherland, and for most of the disc it's a solitary journey of voice, guitar, some piano, and subtle accompaniments. Listen to the Ian Hunter vocal stylings on "Hard Sometimes," the ambience eloquent and pervasive while the message is communicated. Sutherland does a masterful job of putting spirit and story through the speakers, adding bits of Tom Rush and Bob Dylan, of course, but in a studied manner and with great authority. He calls this "acoustic music to soothe the troubled soul" and Lorna Sutherland's back- and front-cover paintings do a nice job of reflecting that.
