Universal Master Collection
$23.29 The Netherlands' popular band Trace's 1974 self-titled debut returns in this rerelease which includes two bonus tracks not included in the original--"Progress" and "Tabu."
This is the first release by the Dutch group Trace, formed in 1973 by keyboardist Rick van der Linden (previously the leader of Ekseption) with drummer Pierre van der Linden (from the group Focus) and bassist Jaap van Eik (with various groups). As expected, van der Linden's keyboards pretty much dominate the session, which is a decent effort by progressive rock standards. "Galliarde" blends part of Bach's "Italian Concerto in F major" (BMV 971) with a traditional Polish dance that originated in the 13th century. This piece incorporates a small pipe organ, a Hammond organ, and a mellotron. It segues into van Eik's "Gare le Corbeau" (primarily a feature for electric bass) before returning to a reprise of "Galliarde." Grieg's "The Death of Ace" (from his "Peer Gynt Suite") begins with a piano solo by the leader, before the tedious mellotron returns to simulate a mournful choir; van der Linden's synthesizer playing also leaves a lot to be desired on this track. Among van der Linden's originals on this record, "The Escape of the Piper" blends a touch of jazz with a whimsical inclusion of bagpipes; while "Once" features the keyboardist on organ in an up-tempo blues groove, as well as a bit of electric harpsichord ...
| | Gryphon About As Curious As It Can Be CD (2002)
Universal Master Collection
$15.89 This combines two mid-'70s BBC sessions onto one CD, the first part containing three songs from a May 1974 appearance, the second comprising five cuts from a November 1975 show. The personnel's the same on each session, other than the replacement of bassist Philip Nestor (who plays on the 1974 tracks) with bassist/flutist Malcolm Bennett on the 1975 segment. Most of the repertoire is taken from their third and fourth albums (Midnight Mushrumps and Raindance), with the rock and electronic keyboards taking a greater role on the second session than on the first. Gryphon really owed as much to folk and medieval music as they did to progressive rock, and this document shows them to be pretty capable of blending the forms with skill and some whimsy in a live setting, without as much of the bombast and pretension usually associated with ambitious art rock. It couldn't have ...

| | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Universal Master Collection
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining
Unlike its 2002 predecessor, Back in the U.S./Back in the ...
