Shoegaze proved tougher to kill than its many detractors believed. In the last couple of years, bands have been popping up all over that are clearly in the tradition of the shoegaze sound. Some of these bands, like Manitoba, have taken the sound as a starting point and created innovative, exciting music. Most have not. Run Run Run is one of these underachievers. Their debut EP, Drizzle, is like a shoegaze karaoke disc. Each track is a blatant steal from one of the originators of the style. "Drizzle" is like late-period Ride crossed with Spiritualized, "Song and Dance" is like Moose crossed with the Catherine Wheel, "Skyscraper" is Swervedriver mixed with Ride again, with some very clichéd lyrics. "2 A.M." is the Smashing Pumpkins crossed with Zwan; "All of a Sudden" is Spiritualized crossed with Ride again. Referencing all these bands might be okay if Run Run Run exhibited even an ounce of originality or a spark of life. As it is, their weak vocals, cookie-cutter guitars, and boring songs mean that the disc is about as unpleasant and uninviting as the weather condition it is named after. [Initial pressings of the EP come with a bonus disc featuring the video for "Skyscraper"]. ~ Tim Sendra

Some of these bands, like Manitoba, have taken the sound as a starting point and created innovative, exciting music. Most have not. Run Run Run is one of these. Their debut EP, Drizzle, is a shoegaze karaoke disc with each track a cop of one of the originators of the style. Referencing all these bands might be okay if Run Run Run exhibited a spark of originality but sadly they don't have strong enough songs to break free of the copyist tag. Drizzle songs
$13.75 At first glance, Halford's entry into the crowded holiday market looks like a parody. Heavy metal and Christmas make for strange bedfellows, and WINTER SONGS' pastoral cover art -- which depicts Rob Halford staring wistfully (with a goatee and shades) into a soft, snowy pine forest -- screams Spinal Tap. That said, the Judas Priest frontman approaches yuletide standards like "We Three Kings" and "What Child Is This?" with the same conviction that he applied to Priest classics like "Electric Eye" and "Freewheel Burning" -- it probably helps that most traditional Christmas hymns tend to fall into the same brooding minor keys that serve as the foundation for most, if not all, heavy metal songs. While WINTER SONGS, like Twisted Sister's excellent 2006 TWISTED CHRISTMAS collection, may not be ...
| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Drizzle album
$14.38 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black ...

| | London Punk Rock Collection CD (2000) (Import) Canada
Drizzle songs
$17.69 Best remembered for the presence of future Culture Club drummer Jon Moss, both London and their Animal Games album were very much ranked in the lower regions of the punk hierarchy, just one more in the endless gaggle of bands who arose in response to the first wave of the movement without an original bone in their bodies. That, at least, is how the history books recall them, but the reality of the matter, as documented on this 15-track collection, is somewhat less scathing. Comprising Animal Games in its entirety together with sundry associated singles and EP tracks, The Punk Rock Collection opens with the volcanic "No Time," still one of the most vicariously thrilling noises of the entire era, and immediately paints a capital band who knew precisely ...
| | Paul Brown City CD (2005)
Drizzle album
$11.69 In 2004, when longtime smooth jazz producer Paul Brown unleashed his more personal guitar artistry via his solo debut, Up Front, and its hit airplay track "24/7," he created an interesting future dilemma for himself: he might someday be competing for radio time and sales against some of the superstars he'd helped to the top. The oft-imitated but never equaled producer, composer, and arranger has been the primary architect of the genre's urban sound for close to 15 years, scoring over 40 number one airplay hits for genre stars like Boney James (who duets with Brown on "Old Friends" and the title track), Rick Braun, Peter White, Kirk Whalum, Euge Groove, Norman Brown, Patti Austin, Larry Carlton, and legendary labelmates Al Jarreau and, in a cool full-circle career twist, Brown's chief jazz guitar influence, George Benson. Opening with the quirky and infectious "Cosmic Monkey," which features wordless vocals by Jeffrey Osborne, Brown gets even looser and funkier on this brilliant follow-up, inviting you into a whole new type of grooving playground. It's refreshing to hear tunes in this genre that sound so organic and uncontrived; the strutting, jamming, and funk-drenched "Las Vegas," written with guitarist Chuck Loeb and featuring ...
