Jazz For A Summer's Day music CDs
$10.55 Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Bob Norberg (Capitol Mastering).
Sinatra's years on the Capitol label (1953-60) were great years. His voice had matured into a powerful and poignant instrument; his sense of swing was infallible; and he was blessed with an innovative and sophisticated arranger, Nelson Riddle, whose charts fit Sinatra like a beautiful suit.
This one-disc compilation of 20 songs includes many classics: "I've Got You Under My Skin," "You Make Me Feel So Young," "The Lady Is a Tramp," In The Wee Small Hours of the Morning," and "One For ...

| | Will Downing Classique CD (2009)
Jazz For A Summer's Day album
$14.39 The title of Will Downing's 2009 effort, CLASSIQUE, produced by the artist and Rex Rideout, may be a bit misleading: it is not a compilation but a brand-spanking new collection of contemporary jazz-inflected R&B--in other words, classic Downing. The album's first single, "Something Special"--with its hand drums, loops, and slippery flute flitting around a well-placed, subtle horn section--is at its core a popping midtempo love song. Elsewhere, his cover of Barry White's "I'm Gonna Love You Just a Little Bit More Baby" reveals just how deep the master's influence is on Downing. He may not have the full depth of White's baritone, ...

| | Mark Elf Trickynometry CD (1997)
Jazz For A Summer's Day music CDs
$12.89 This is a particularly interesting program by boppish guitarist Mark Elf. The date starts out strong (with "Trickynometry" and "Dot Com Blues"), featuring a quintet that includes trumpeter Nicholas Payton, and one regrets that Payton is only on one of the remaining ten numbers. In addition to Elf (who is in top form), the musicians include Bobby LaVell on tenor (for the same three songs as Payton), either Christian McBride or Neal Miner on bass and drummer Yoron Israel. Grady Tate and Miles Griffith take a vocal apiece, but most tunes feature Elf in a trio. The music is consistently excellent with other highlights including "Just In Time," "Milestones" and "Monk Like"; if only Payton (who sounds pretty fiery in spots) had been persuaded to stick around for the other songs too. ~ Scott Yanow

| | Arcado Behind The Myth CD (1990) (Import)
Jazz For A Summer's Day songs
$15.09 Recorded during a stop in Arcado's 1990 tour, Behind the Myth finds the band playing chamber music with a jazz musician's imagination. The band can hop around like Christian Marclay but without the turntables and trading Marclay's love of chance for all three members' love of intricate composition. This isn't really difficult music -- the tunes are often lyrical and heartwarming -- but it is an album that demands full attention to work at all. You can't "sort of" listen to a Chomsky lecture and get anything out of it; same with Arcado. Unlike Chomsky, this trio does have a sense of flair. At one point Dresser's cello sounds like the deep blue sea with Feldman and Roberts acting as speedboats skipping across it. Five minutes into the searching "Ediface," ...

Recorded on reel-to-reel and cassette, these tracks are primitive but warm, and include not only the young songwriter's earliest original work, but also covers of songs by his influences, like Bob Dylan, Dave Van Ronk, Bert Jansch, and even Mozart. With only three albums as his legacy, ...
