For its third effort, ZOEgirl moves away from the dance-pop of Life and its accompanying remix album to access a layered, sculpted rock sound that falls somewhere between Avril Lavigne and Sugar Ray. But while their delivery system is strikingly similar to the mainstream ("Love Me for Me" could be Pink's "Don't Let Me Get Me" with just a little R-rated tweaking), ZOEgirl is one of the only pop groups that can give mad props to Jesus and really mean it. Alisa Girard, Chrissy Conway, and Kristin Swinford use their three-part harmonious powers for good -- they include biblical passages with each song, and focus their lyrics on the complicated life issues that teenage girls face every day. "Feel Alright" decries the fakery of celebrity and glamour images over a groovy update of the Primitives, while the single "You Get Me" is a conventional devotion rewritten with roaring guitars and Pro Tools. It's a good plan, hijacking the soundtrack to Lavigne's pouting and precocious teenage rebellion to ferry messages of ministry and positivity. And Tedd Tjornholm's production gets it right at Different Kind of Free's every turn. Even more serious material like "She" is able to balance its message with an electro-acoustic groove that recalls Dido or the more pop-oriented work of the Corrs. Lyrics like "Lord, you get me" and "There's a miracle waiting/For all who speak His name" are certain to make some secular types shy away from ZOEgirl. But the trio and its talented collaborators deserve credit for embracing an up-to-the-second sound without hiding their Christian values under a bushel basket. It's CCM's burden that it either dilutes the music in favor of message, or hides its faith while feeling around for stardom. ZOEgirl's Different Kind of Free is that unique Christian music album that happily hops on the pop bandwagon, but doesn't just sit on its Bible when it gets there. ~ Johnny Loftus Even though Christian bands from Kings X to MxPx long ago figured out how to rock convincingly, it's rare for faith-based based music to actually be sexy. Zoegirl, however, pulls off the seemingly impossible by packing DIFFERENT KIND OF FREE with enough seductive warbling and booty-shakin' grooves to make Britney blush. In addition, this time around, the trio stakes a serious claim in Michelle Branch/Avril Lavigne cool alterna-girl territory by adding giant-sounding guitars and a thundering rhythm section that's more Aerosmith than Amy Grant. (The group even cops the riff from the Who's "Can't Explain" for "Feel Alright.") That said, Zoegirl is still a CCM band and, though the members play down their Christian mission on many songs, "Life to Me," a sweeping, passionately performed ballad, is, perhaps not coincidentally, both the album's best and most overtly religious track. Thoroughly modern, chock full of hooks, and expertly produced, DIFFERENT KIND OF FREE should appeal both to listeners looking for a higher power and a powerful pure pop high. ZOEGIRL IS AMAZING!!! ZOEGIRL's latest album is AWESOME! EVERY SONG ON "A DIFFERENT KIND OF FREE" IS BREATH-TAKING. The rating should go up to 100% because that is what this album deserves!!! When you hear their beautiful voices, excellent beats(you will be surprised), and completely CHRIST-CENTERED messages, you will be in awe. They are excellent encouragers and the message of their music is an example of how to continue a steady walk with JESUS CHRIST. The song, "LIFE TO ME" is a beautiful song that will bring tears to your eyes. I recommend this album to both ZOEGIRL fans and others who want to listen to TRUE MUSIC. You WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED. Great cd! I loved ZOEgirl's cds ever sence 2000.When I first heard the cd.It was great,I loved it.So in year 2001.My mother bought "Life".That cd was also great.(YEAH,great memories)Any way about "Diffrent kind of free",I realy enjoyed that.My favorite song was "You Get Me".My second favorite song was "Contagous".But I think they should of called it NA NA.Anyway the music in this cd it kinda like ROCKpop. That means when like the song is going smoothly,it pumps up and goes crazy.Just like "Beautiful name".This reveiw would of made you think that I would of gave this cd a 5outof5 stars. But I didn't because none of the songs had gautar playing, only electric gautar playing. But that deosn't realy matter only the christian truth if you know what mean Submitted by a reviewer (LaPlata MD USA) Was This Review Helpful? Different Kind Of Free music CDs
$17.75 In the last four decades, Frank Stagnitta has made a name for himself on the international jazz scene performing with players such as Chet Baker, Zoot Sims, Phil Woods, Woody Shaw, Charles McPherson, Mingus Dynasty, Barbara Morrison, Eddie Gomez, Guis Hendricks, and Tom Harrell. From 1985 to 2000 he was living in Holland, teaching at Konenlijk Conservatory in The Hague and performing at jazz festivals throughout Europe with people like Sal Nistico/Rachel Gould Quintet, Domagoy Rolinsic, Guis Hendriks, Douglas Sides, and Benny Bailey.Recently, Frank came back to the United States, and for a short time, he returned to his home in Syracuse New York. While there, he collaborated with bassist Matt Vacanti to produce a record. With the help of Josh Dekaney and Jimmy Johns on drums, they have put together a beautiful collection of jazz tunes. Two are original compositions by Frank himself. "Waiting" is a beautiful ballad and "The Legend of Joe Rip" which was a birthday present to Syracuse's own Joe Riposo, an alto sax player and arranger who was a big influence on Frank. The rest of the record contains unique and creative renditions of some of Frank's favorite yet rarely performed jazz standards like "Pensativa" by Clare Fisher and "Just a Ballad for My Baby" by Freddie Redd. This CD was recorded and mixed by Matt Vacanti at Spider Records in Baldwinsville in the Summer of 2004.A note from Frank....The evolutionary road of the artist sometimes takes unexpected exits, turns, and innumerable stops and starts. Inspiration results from relentless work: time, patience, open-mindedness, good attitude, luck, and faith in the people one works with have their definite place in the overall scheme of creation. The music on this CD was conceived to reach a feeling of being able to play together on traditional but challenging material.About the tunes: Hank Mobley was one of the more important tenor player-composers in jazz. Stella-Wise and Hank's Tune are from the late 50's and happily display Mobley's beautiful melodic sense. I first heard Pensativa (and Clare Fisher, a consummate pianist, arranger-composer) in the late 60's live in NYC with the Freddy Hubbard Quintet. It's a wonderful song as are many of Fischer's other ...
