Who expected a big stylistic turnabout? Probably nobody. Is there a big stylistic turnabout? Of course not. Album number four, Spoon and Rafter, is merely another worthy addition to the discography of Mojave 3, whose Neil Halstead is steadily building a swelling stockpile of charming, bittersweet, easygoing songs that warrant almost all of the comparisons -- to icons of '60s British folk and American country-rock alike -- that have been drawn throughout the years. Not to beat a dead horse or anything, but bassist Rachel Goswell plays her most reduced role to date, chiming in, as always, with invaluable background vocals, yet she contributes no lead turns this time -- not even one. This one irritating issue does contradict the fact that the album feels more like a natural and collaborative effort than the others. Perhaps that feel has something to do with the fact that it was recorded in their new studio, allowing them to work at their own pace. The songs remain simple, yet the interplay between the instruments is more intricate and lively than before, with minor touches -- twinkles of glockenspiel, splashes of Moog, quivers of theremin -- falling with ease into the snug mix. As consistent as the group has been with its sound since its second album, the feather-light debut is beginning to seem more and more like Slowdive's swan song. In fact, there are such minor differences between the records that have followed since that debut that most will only feel the need to hold on to one of them. Still, Spoon and Rafter has no trouble making Ryan Adams seem like more of a farce than he already is, and it's deserving of at least half of the attention given to anything released by Wilco. ~ Andy Kellman

Spoon And Rafter Music Review Average Rating: (4.5 out of 5 stars) mojave 3, et al prior to this release, "ask me tomorrow" was my favorite mojave 3 cd, but "spoon and rafter" tops it. i'm a sucker for sad songs and this cd has em, but it also exhibits many different influences. listen closely and you can hear - belle and sebastian, nick drake, the shins(!), and of course slowdive - and a wee bit of country. a great cd from halstead & co. Melancholia Hey all you suckers for sad songs, this fourth album from the UK five piece is terribly and wonderfully sad. Like a wraith on a gray day it lilts through your ears with ghostly harmonies, haunting melodies and a solemnity that parallels the pitter-patter of raindrops falling on pavement. It evokes romantic reflections on all of life’s sadder things, if indeed life isn’t totally saddening to begin with, which after a few listens, very well could be the case. This is not to say that it’s utterly depressing, in fact, there’s enough sweetness in these folky orchestrations that by the end of the record, hope rises like a lily among the ashes of lost loves, long goodbyes and even longer distances. It makes the silence that follows all the more heavy. Submitted by a reviewer (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Spoon And Rafter album
$10.15 Building on the lush, complex sound established on I CAN HEAR THE HEART BEATING AS ONE and continued on 2000's AND THEN NOTHING TURNED ITSELF INSIDE-OUT, Hoboken's favorite trio wades in still deeper on 2003's SUMMER SUN. With vocalist/guitarist Ira Kaplan affecting a whispered croon and his drummer wife Georgia Hubley wielding brushes, this outing goes from the vibraphone jauntiness of "Moonrock Mambo" to the swirling, 10-minute "Let's Be Still" featuring contributions from downtown jazzbos William ...

"Gold Dust Woman" as a Southern rock song? "Dreams" with a dance beat? "Don't Stop" as a rah-rah cheerleading chant sung by Elton John? Um, wait a minute, that one makes perfect sense. At first, the mishmash of bands gathered here to cover Fleetwood Mac's 1977 landmark RUMOURS in its entirety is a bit baffling. There's the post-grunge rock band Matchbox 20; singer-songwriters Shawn Colvin and Jewel, pop-punkers, Celtic rock bands, and a single British superstar (John) who's one of the few artists significantly older than RUMOURS itself.
But the fact is, RUMOURS, a brutally honest pop album about infidelities and other romantic indiscretions, really does resonate for all these artists, and if the variety of their performances doesn't quite make for a seamless album, it is a testament to the resilience of the amazing collection of 11 songs penned way back when by Lindsey Buckingham, Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie. Of course, it can't be easy going up against classic pop singles like "Dreams" and "Don't Stop," and as such it's the less-familiar songs that shine brightest here. Tonic may well have discovered a new pop standard in "Second Hand News." And love 'em or hate 'em, give Matchbox 20 ...
