Ray Brown has many great contributions to jazz as a leader and a sideman, but one additional way in which he helped jazz was his encouraging Gene Harris to give up his early retirement and go back out on the road. The pianist was a part of Brown's groups for several years before he formed a working quartet and became a leader for good once again. This 1988 concert at a since-defunct Santa Monica night club (co-owned by Brown) finds the two, along with drummer Jeff Hamilton, at the top of their game. A phone ringing in the background distracts momentarily from Brown's opening solo in his composition "The Real Blues," during which Harris repeats a bluesy tremolo, which may be an inside joke about the early distraction. Harris take a blues-drenched approach to "Mona Lisa" before giving way to the leader's solo, while his lyrical approach to "Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man" is shimmering. Hamilton's soft brushes are prominent in "Little Darlin'," but his explosive playing provides a powerful pulse to the very unusual strutting take of "It Don't Mean a Thing." This extremely satisfying CD is warmly recommended. ~ Ken Dryden

| | Serah & Friedemann Flight Of The Stork CD (1990)
Live At The Loa-Summer Wind album
$16.20 Serah's record company and publicist described Flight of the Stork as a new age album, but in truth, she falls more into the singer-songwriter category. Although Serah's representatives obviously saw the "new age" label as a convenient marketing tool, this conceptual, atmospheric CD is best described as acoustic-oriented folk-pop. Consistently tranquil and pastoral, Serah's music does have a calm and reflective spirituality that some may equate with the new age movement. But while a lot of new age serves primarily as background music, Serah's lyrics inspire the listener to think and pay close attention. For all their delicacy, songs like "White Rose," "New Moon" and "Above the Shadow" are too substantial to be relegated to the background. ~ Alex Henderson
For some, the eyes are the mirror of the soul. For Serah, it's her voice. Her music is ripe with emotions, both intense and subtle, that flow through the lyrics, melodies and rhythms - all the bounty from an artist blessed. "I love the whole creative process," says Serah, who's an exceptional painter, as well. (Her painting of a pair of harvest gold angels in the CD art of Late Harvest is a gift unto itself.) "Very often, when I've finished an album, I take a couple of deep breaths and I'm all set - I want to do another one. I'm always listening for a key of inspiration. I write a song and decide that it will be the theme for an album."Authentic in all aspects of her life, Serah truly brings the world to world music. A resident of the breathtaking mountains of California, she has also lived in France and Africa."I'm always loving to explore and incorporate the whole world music theme, simply because it's been my life," Serah reveals. "When I lived in Africa, I was working the drought area and at that point in my life, I felt like maybe doing music wasn't enough. I felt like I needed to do something hands-on. It was a lot harder than my idealism ever anticipated, but it always seems like something Higher than you gets you through it. I feel grateful that it happened - and that I was able to do it. I feel like it has never stopped blessing me. And one of the wonderful things about being ...
