Mystery Tracks Archives, Vol. 3 is Steve Vai's third installment of his planned ten-disc rarities retrospective, this time out collecting various hard-to-find Japanese bonus tracks, compilation cuts, and otherwise unavailable promotional tracks. Included is an edited version of the notorious "Kill the Guy With the Ball," retitled here "Speeding," and like most of the other tracks that appeared on import versions of Vai's albums, it's the type of shredding that folks have come to expect from Vai. The version of "Sofa" done at the Zappa's Universe concert, long out of print, is also included here. The most interesting tracks, however, come from some of the instrument demonstration cuts done for companies like Korg and Roland. On these tracks, Vai was inspired by (and constrained by) the sounds available to the instrument he was showcasing, and it leads him down a different path than that generally represented on his albums. There's far less bombast in these understated performances, and they really give a better indication of what a well-rounded player Vai can be. "Maple Leafs," a track featuring just Vai and Mike Keneally on guitars, is another understated beauty. Don't worry. There's still plenty here that will thrill fans of Vai's über-guitar technique (just try "Opposites Attract, Pt. 2"), but there is more to Steve than that. Fans will be quite pleased to finally have these tunes all gathered together in an easy-to-find package. ~ Sean Westergaard Though to the uniformed Steve Vai is known solely for his incredible electric guitar "shredding," fans of the musician recognize him as the most musically innovative and wildly eclectic figure to emerge from the '80s metal scene. MYSTERY TRACKS: ARCHIVES VOL. 3 is the third in a series of discs collecting Vai's "golden scraps"-- unreleased tracks, demo recordings and other ephemera. For some artists a collection like this might signal a collectors-only pile of not-ready-for-prime-time music better left on the trash heap, but in Vai's case it's just the opposite. Steve Vai is at his best when left to his own devices, and here the listener is treated to the sounds of an immensely talented musician doing what he loves most with absolute freedom. From crazed, death-defying metal chops-fests ("Just Cartilage") to the gorgeous "Tears In Heaven"-style acoustic ballad "Selfless Love," Vai performs with a jaw-dropping combination of unbridled enthusiasm and pure technique that will send even skilled musicians scurrying for the practice room. Mystery Tracks Archives Vol. 3 Music Steve Vai Mystery Tracks Archives Vol. 3 Songs Mystery Tracks Archives Vol. 3 Music Review Average Rating: (4.7 out of 5 stars) It's breathtaking! Stevie Vai, the master of the "space age guitar", brings to us a collection of incredible, most beautiful guitar parts which stand on top of all I ever heard. The way he plays, makes the world a lot better than anyone could do. My heart feels warm and peaceful, thanks to Steve. Submitted by Heiko (Pattensen, Germany) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Excellent Vai from the Archive! I've been a big Vai fan for 14 years and I am always looking for songs I haven't heard. This CD is full of amazing unreleased/demo/import only tracks, most of which I'd never heard! This is Vai like you know and love.. Shred songs, beautiful melodic songs, and everything inbetween. Check it out! Submitted by a reviewer (Seattle, WA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
One of my favorite artists! Steve Vai has consistently put out good music for quite a while now. A lot of people just think of him as this over the top guitarist. But he is also a really good vocalist and lyricist. This was another really good outing. Being a drummer I really enjoyed his hopped up rendition of wipe out. | | Nancy Sinatra Movin' With Nancy CD (1968)
Mystery Tracks Archives Vol. 3
$11.59 Taking on the Top 40, twang and Tin Pan Alley, our favorite blonde was comfy beyond the confines of her trademark kitten-with-a-whip Lee Hazlewood collaborations. Sundazed lovingly fusses over Nancy's catalog with meticulous restoration. This release includes the bonus tracks 'Drummer Man', 'I Love Them All (The Boys In The Band) ' and 'Good Time Girl'.
Personnel: Nancy Sinatra (vocals). Liner Note Author: Charles Granata. Director: Jack Haley, Jr. Arranger: Billy Strange. Sundazed released a 1996 CD version of the original Movin' With Nancy album, adding three bonus tracks to the 1968 soundtrack from her television special, and it earns high marks for documenting more of the fun and campy escapades of Frank Sinatra's daughter. Without the opportunity to surpass her dad the way Mira Sorvino or Charlie Sheen may have moved beyond Paul Sorvino and Martin Sheen in terms of popularity, Nancy Sinatra deserves credit for a sultry, hip image and the ability to hit a few home runs. It's easy to hit a home run, of course, when your father owns a piece of the record label, Reprise, and a Rodgers & Hammerstein composition makes its way onto track four, like "Younger Than Springtime," sung by "a very close relative." The uncredited Frank Sinatra performance is great, of course, and is followed by a Dean Martin/Nancy Sinatra "duet" on the Bobby Darin song "Things." It sure sounds like dad called up Martin and asked if he wouldn't mind Nancy overdubbing her voice on a pre-existing Martin track -- this was, of course, before the days of putting Natalie Cole on a Nat "King" Cole master. Despite the awkwardness of it, there is a certain charm that adds to the festivities. Make no mistake, this is a festive album. Heck, some kids go to the circus with their folks, Nancy Sinatra got to play at the record company. Her vocal style is on par with Claudine Longet and Jo Jo Laine, not the kind of singing to give Whitney Houston or Jackie DeShannon sleepless nights, but charming nonetheless. Where this Sinatra really shines is when she and producer Lee Hazlewood do the Sonny & Cher routine on the previous hit, "Jackson," and the real gem here, "Some Velvet Morning." When Nancy Sinatra has Hazlewood as her foil, she is outstanding. Though "Some Velvet Morning" was number nine ...
