| | M83 Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts CD M83 Discography of CDs
Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau, two young Frenchmen with a penchant for electronic music, released their first album as M83 in 2001. Two years later (three in the US), they upped the ante with DEAD CITIES, RED SEAS & LOST GHOSTS. It's easy to forgive the countless My Bloody Valentine comparisons the duo garners, especially when the ethereal-yet-organic flow of their swirling, sparkling sound pushes the same emotional buttons that LOVELESS did over a dozen years earlier. The main difference between M83 and MBV, however, is that in sharp contrast to Kevin Shields's lush guitar orchestrations, most of M83's sounds are electronically generated. The blissful swoops and shudders that grace every track may sound like forces of nature, but their origins are largely digital. In this respect, one might make just as valid a connection to the mid-'90s ambient folk-pop of Flying Saucer Attack. Reference points aside, DEAD CITIES is a standout recording of its time, whether you stack it among contemporaries in rock, electronica, or any other genre.
From electronica to pop to ambient, M83's distinct sound emerged after just one album: both modern and melancholic. The group make machines seem human by endowing them with a mysterious and innocent character, one that mirrors the personality of the two band members, Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau. "Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts" possesses a more assertive sound, going beyond the band's first album. Anthony and Nicolas have raised the bar - without foregoing their exceptional sense of melody or losing their ability to communicate sound in a fresh new way - generating complexity by alternating slow tracks and faster ones.

Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts album
$12.09 Nothing less than an indie-rock milestone, this is what happens when a number of musicians from the Canadian post-rock scene (including members of Godspeed You Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, and Do Make Say Think) abandon their extended-jam conceptualizing in favor of short, optimistic, pop-oriented songs. Things start out in a jazzy, bass-heavy space before morphing into "KC Accidental," a guitar-layered track that sounds like the Allman Brothers covering Sonic Youth's "Teenage Riot." Catchy hooks triplicate alongside hand clapping, fuzz guitar, and Brendan Canning's whispered vocals on "Stars and Sons," while the mellow, acoustic "Looks Just Like the Sun" gives way to the twangy neo-Tropicalia and cockeyed (but uplifting and cohesive) experimentalism of "Pacific Theme."
Emily Haines (of the Metrics) lends a vocal to "Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl," which ends in a roundelay of swirling violins and banjo. "Cause = Time" is an even more tuneful brother to "Stars and Sons" that's so good, ...

Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts CD music
$29.49 Like 2002's Thought for Food, The Lemon of Pink combines experimental collage technique with an organic, folky mixture of banjo, guitar, violin, simple vocal melodies, and snippets of conversation. The collage technique snaps like that of the United States of America, but is used to introduce glitches in the melodic elements, whereas the U.S.A. attempted to subvert the tradition of the pop form. The title track's straightforward, melancholic phrasing and subtle string accompaniment are not unlike Cat Power's work with the Dirty Three, mostly due to Anne Doerner's ...

Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts music CDs
$9.25 The centerpiece is "Take Me Out" (a U.K. top ten hit), which plays out a series of come-ons between rival assassins, over what begins as a sneering slice of mid-1990s Britpop, only to morph into a funky dance-floor tune. Kapranos is often quoted as saying that the band was started in order to "make music that girls can dance to," but this unusually assured debut is quite likely to ...

Well, the Boyz got themselves a serious blues-shouter who goes by the name Sugaray Rayford. Hailing from Tyler Texas, Sugaray possesses one of those powerful ,gospel-soaked voices that can take the meekest of songs and improve it. He and his mates start their debut disc, "Trunk Full Of Bluez", on the good foot with a ripping 12-bar blues shuffle called "Jelly Roll". Sugaray ...
