A two-album saga based upon Norse mythology, the first chapter of Bathory's Nordland frankly comes off as somewhat less accomplished and, well, immense in scope compared to similar epic works conjured in recent years by new groups such as Edge of Sanity and Green Carnation. But before we drive a stake through Bathory main man Seth Quorthon's black heart, let's get some perspective here. Like many masters of old, Bathory's music derives from an altogether different place and time, and, lest we forget, taking a template and improving upon it is usually far easier than creating the template from scratch in the first place. Therefore, much like Venom, who saw their thrash metal sketches developed to an entirely different level of musical mastery and compositional depth by the likes of Metallica and Slayer, so do Bathory's once groundbreaking black metal overtures often seem elementary when compared to those of his dedicated former students -- now competitors. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords -- basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls, and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering songs by Will Oldham and Jeff Buckley. Consider this the true follow-up to Burnt by the Sun's hugely promising self-titled debut EP. This is the group's second full-length, following 2002's Soundtrack to the Personal Revolution, an album that was widely acclaimed yet still somewhat disappointing to some fans of the more experimental, grindcore-leaning EP. Soundtrack found the band reorienting to a sort of all-American, middle-of-the-road hardcore-metal fusion that, while still fairly heavy, seemed tame in comparison to that earlier release. Lyrically, it also came off as preachy and pedantic in spots. This disc remedies those problems, though. Musically, it falls somewhere between the EP and Soundtrack, merging melodic, groove-heavy metalcore with streaks of dissonant grindcore and Morbid Angel-worthy death metal. The songs in general flow better here than on the last album, with highlights "Battleship," "Forlani," and "Washington Tube Steak" exploding with riff after memorable, well-placed riff.
