DANGEROUS MAGICAL NOISE is a 2003 release by the Dirtbombs, led by Detriot garage-rock legend Mick Collins, featuring "Start the Party" and "Don't Break My Heart."
Following the all-covers ULTRAGLIDE IN BLACK with a set of like-minded originals, the Dirtbombs prove that their revved-up modern take on vintage garage rock and greasy R&B is every bit as solid as their influences. Frontman Mick Collins, playing guitar in front of two bassists and two drummers, is as frenzied and passionate as ever on tracks like the bluesy "Sun Is Shining" and the Merseyside power pop of "Earthquake Heart." Elsewhere, "I'm Through With White Girls" overtly plays with the implications of a black man fronting an otherwise white, punky band in a way that most wouldn't dare, and does so with sly good humor.
Japanese edition of 2003 album from one of Mick Collins' post-Gories projects features 15 tracks including 2 bonus tracks, 'King's Lead Hat' (Eno cover) & 'Possession'. In The Red.
Japanese edition adds two extra songs.Spin (01/04, p.102) - "...It's shaping up to be a pretty busy year for Dirtbombs frontman Mick Collins....DANGEROUS MAGICAL NOISE confirms that he's still one of underground rock's true iconoclasts..." Q (12/03, p.123) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...DANGEROUS MAGICAL NOISE is a stoned gas..." Uncut (11/03, p.118) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...Typically entertaining: fuzzy, thrashy rock'n'soul with nods to T.Rex..." Magnet (2/04, p.96) - "The Dirtbombs' unique fusion of heavy, pulsing bass and high-energy rock 'n' roll places them firmly in the tradition of their musical forebears..." Mojo (Publisher) (12/03, p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Dangerous, magical, and gleefully noisy." Dangerous Magical Noise album
$12.29 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they do best. Warren Haynes and his guitar are, as usual, front and center, his guitar screaming, his big throaty growl hammering down lyrics like a Southern fire-and-brimstone preacher with earthshaking ...

| | Hamid Drake Eloping With The Sun CD (2003)
Dangerous Magical Noise CD music
$12.99 This delightful recording takes flight toward its solar elopement based on a very simple principle. Three musicians who play together regularly, much of their music totally improvised, get together for another recording session that will feature not their normal instruments but a variation that is deliberately stripped quite bare. Instead of electric guitar, Joe Morris brought his banjo and banjouke, the latter a bastardization that looks like a Mini-Me version of a banjo that can't get out of a ukulele jumper it was trying on. William Parker carted along something called a zintir, no doubt with great relief as it meant one less trip on the subway carrying his normal double bass. Hamid Drake was also no doubt gratified that this session required him to bring only a frame drum rather than an entire set of tubs. The zintir is a stringed instrument of sketchy origins, a variation on a quite basic design found in Africa, Asia, Arabia, and South America. These sorts of axes might have between two and four strings, sometimes less or more, and play in the bass register. Philosophically, then, Parker occupies a similar place in the ensemble sound. The same can be said for the other two players. Drake provides the percussion part of this rhythm section, and Morris agitates as the soloist on the top layer. In situations such as this, players often will create with much the same rhythmic gestures and manner of interaction as on their regular instruments, only the resulting sound comes out completely different. Anyone skeptical about this should be reminded of the difference between getting clocked on the forehead with a freshly sharpened pavement chisel or a piece of heavily salted Danish licorice. This instrumental concept means a much less heavy type of assault than is usual for these artists, yet this becomes a special treasure, a demonstration of expressive mastery packaged simply in a ...
