24:7 album
$24.05 This entry into the ongoing Global Underground series represents perhaps the most eclectic mix to date, as Lee Burridge manages to teeter somewhere between straight-ahead mid-tempo house rhythms and dynamic breaks. And he doesn't just follow house records with breaks, but rather spins tracks that feature both styles of beats interwoven within the rhythms. So, given this untraditional approach, Burridge presents a set that's, at the least, always interesting. You're never quite sure where he's headed -- sometimes moving away from breaks towards a more grounded, 4/4 rhythm, other times doing quite the opposite. Furthermore, the ubiquitous progressive sound that has so long been a staple of the Global Underground series is, for the most part, absent here. Yet as unique as this album is within the context of the other Global Underground albums, it's not without flaws. In particular, the first set often drags, ...

This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by Deep Dish.
So for their 25th release, Global Underground recruited the dynamic duo once again to contribute to the long-running series. Two years prior, Deep Dish released one of the highlights of the entire Global Underground catalog with its Moscow mix, and now the duo has returned to pay homage to Toronto. And while they don't necessarily mix in any music from local producers, they've managed to capture the spirit of the city's house scene perfectly, complete with the atmosphere from the city's largest club (Guvermnent). The first disc kicks things off with an excursion into deeper territories of house music. Not exactly Naked Music-styled deep house, but nonetheless more soulful than previous ...

Got drums? U.K. jock Steve Lawler sure does. The man called "King of Space" is widely known for not making a sound, that is, unless it goes boom, bop, click or thump. On his third double-CD mix for the superpower Global Underground Lawler's, outer space drum line is in full effect. But like the entire dance scene in general, Lawler has become ...

| | Buck Owens I've Got A Tiger By The Tail CD (1965)
24:7 CD music
$11.79 Buck Owens had his share of country hits prior to the release of I've Got a Tiger by the Tail and the hit single that spawned it. But "I've Got a Tiger by the Tail" was Owens' national breakthrough, featuring everything right about his Bakersfield honky tonk sound sweated down to a 2:12 single that proved to be a irresistible piece of crossover magic to non-country fans without diluting his basic sound one iota. This 14-track CD reissue brings together the original Capitol tracks from that album (which also included the hit "Cryin' Time," later to be a crossover hit of its own when recorded by Ray Charles), along with two bonus tracks. These are live versions recorded in Bakersfield at the Civic Auditorium in October 1963 of "This Ol' Heart" and "Act Naturally," taken from the Capitol anthology album Country Music Hootenanny. The sound of Don Rich is all over this album, with his signature biting Telecaster guitar style, plus his vocalizing on "Wham Bam" (which features Owens on lead guitar) and a feature with Buck on a duet of Chuck Berry's "Memphis." Bass player Doyle Holly handles the vocal chores on "Streets of Laredo," while Don Rich's fiddle work is highlighted on the instrumental "A Maiden's Prayer." But ultimately it's Owens' show with tracks like "Trouble and Me," "We're Gonna Let the Good Times Roll," "If You Fall Out of Love With Me," "The Band Keeps Playin' On," and the ballad "Let the Sad Times Roll On" being classic examples of Owens' Bakersfield honky tonk sound at the height of its freight-train rumbling powers. ~ Cub Koda
This 14-track CD reissue By Sundazed brings together the original Capitol tracks from that album along with two live bonus tracks 'This Ol' Heart' and 'Act Naturally.' 1995.

| | Kool & The Gang Hits: Reloaded CDs (2004)
24:7 music CDs
$12.79 Originally a two-disc set in the U.K., Kool & the Gang's The Hits: Reloaded gets its release in a one-disc edition for America. Gone are the group's collaborations with folks like Beverley Knight, Blazin' Squad, and Atomic Kitten (who turned in a ridiculously fun version of "Ladies Night"). Of course, those aren't names on the tip of most Americans' tongues, but their absence takes a lot of the fun out of the compilation, making it a pleasant but uneventful listen. Redman supplies some good times with his jumpy take on "Jungle Boogie," but he uses a naughty word and Sanctuary has ...

| | Sandra Lea Wise Kiss Me! CD (2003)
24:7 CD music
$8.35 Sandra Lea Wise was born in El Paso, Texas, but spent her youth in Brazil. When she was seven years old her parents moved to Rio de Janeiro. Sandra was educated in Brazilian schools and spoke Portuguese until she returned to the United States at the age of 18. The Latin influence would be a permanent part of Sandra's life. Her love of Latin languages and music is a part of her soul. It always comes as a shock to people that this almost 6-foot blond and former Miss Tall Dallas, speaks Spanish and Portuguese natively. Sandra has taught Portuguese in the Peace Corps, at St. Louis University, where she received her Master of Arts degree in Portuguese and Spanish Literature, and currently teaches Portuguese and Spanish at the University of Texas at Arlington. She enjoys the opportunity to inspire students to learn other languages and in the process get to know other cultures. Over the years Sandra has performed Latin love songs and in 2003 had the opportunity to record the CD Kiss Me!. In the process of recording a voice-over in Portuguese, Spanish and English for Nokia Phone Company, she met Jason LeBlanc, an accomplished songwriter and musician who recently retired from performing on the road and started his own recording company. He had ...
| | That'll Flat Git It! Vol. 23 CD (2006) (Import) Germany
24:7 music CDs
$22.55 It's been widely reported that Mitch Miller, Columbia Records' pop music chief in the '50s, was no friend of rock & roll, but thankfully the folks at the label's Nashville offices (in particular producer Don Law) had a higher hip factor, and this installment in Bear Family's ongoing That'll Flat Git It! series unearths thirty quality rockabilly and rockin' country sides from Columbia's vaults. Ronnie Self's feral "You're So Right for Me" kicks things off in frantic style, and while that's easily the wildest side here, there's plenty more solid rock action, including Self's "Big Blon' Baby," three numbers from the Collins Kids, Billy Brown's "Flip Out" and "Meet Me in the Alley Sally," Bobby Lord's "High Voltage" and the hilarious "Bump!" from Jay Cee Hill. Bear Family have also included some up-tempo hillbilly action here, including a pair of outstanding Johnny Horton cuts, two from Marty Robbins, Carl Story's defiant "What a Line" and Mel Tillis' rare stab at the rockin' stuff, "Teenage Wedding." The set also features the rollicking "Susie's House" from John D. Loudermilk, who would later become a top songwriter, and "Boom Boom Baby" and "Well, Don't You Know" from Billy "Crash" Craddock, who would bring rockabilly back to radio many years later. As usual, Bear Family has done a superb ...
